APP Roles: Learn More

Community Physician Network supports the uniqueness of the advanced practice provider role and how APPs and physicians work together to enhance the patient experience. More and more practice sites are embracing the use of APPs as a vital part of the healthcare team.

What is a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?

Nurse practitioners are registered nurses with a master’s degree in nursing; some have doctoral degrees. NPs are educated to be population focused and obtain national certification. There are multiple specialties for NPs, including acute care, pediatrics, geriatrics, adult and family, psychiatric/behavioral health, and women’s health. Nurse practitioners can diagnose, treat, and manage a variety of medical conditions. NPs can practice independently but must have a collaborative agreement with a physician for prescriptive review. NPs work collaboratively with all members of the health care team to care for the patient and ensure quality.

What is a Physician Assistant (PA)?

Physician assistants obtain a master’s degree or doctoral degree and are nationally certified and state licensed medical providers trained to diagnose illness along with developing and maintaining treatment plans and have prescriptive authority. They often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare professional. PAs learn to make life-saving diagnostic and therapeutic decisions while working with other members of the healthcare team. PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality.

What is a Nurse-Midwife (CNM)?

Certified nurse-midwives are advanced practice nurses who have a master’s or doctoral degree and are licensed, independent primary care providers with prescriptive authority. Midwifery as practiced by CNMs encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause. These services include the independent provision of primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections.

What is a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA)?

Certified registered nurse anesthetists obtain a master’s or doctoral degree and work in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other physicians providing safe administration of anesthesia. These advanced practice nurses can administer anesthesia during surgery and procedures, perform epidurals or nerve blocks for pain management, and provide additional monitoring of patients postoperatively. CRNAs often provide anesthesia services on obstetric units performing epidurals prior to childbirth, as well as anesthesia for cesarean deliveries. Some CRNAs practice under the supervision/direction of an anesthesiologist while others practice independently.

What is a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS)?

Clinical nurse specialists are advanced practice registered nurses who have completed a master’s or doctoral degree in a specific specialty. CNSs strive to improve current health care policies and/or procedures based on evidence based research. They work in a variety of health care settings and specialties. In a hospital setting, CNSs educate and support staff to provide optimal patient care through the use of evidence-based research. They also help to maintain a culture of safety in the healthcare system. Their specialties vary from specific patient populations (adult/pediatrics) to a specific medical disease/condition (diabetes/infectious disease).
