Nutrition is Healthcare at Commmunity Farm

Eating right is essential to healthy living. Which is why in 2018, Community Hospital Anderson broke ground on a small farm plot.

Since then it’s grown to three acres, including a new greenhouse, flower garden, community center and three hives home to 200,000 honey bees. The farm is projected to yield 30,000 pounds of fresh produce annually — to be shared with local food pantries, the hospital kitchen and other caregiver programs.

“Our mission is to enhance the health and well-being of our communities,” explained Marsha Meckel, administrator and chief nursing executive. “We know food insecurity is a concern in Madison County. As Anderson’s largest employer, we have a responsibility to find solutions. We think this farm is a good start.”

“Community Anderson’s responsibility goes beyond the walls of the hospital,” added Tom Bannon, vice president of community engagement. “How can we provide access to healthy and nutritious food? How do we keep people from having to be in the hospital in the first place? The Community Farm is one of the answers.”

The farm at Community Hospital Anderson is just one more way we’re redefining what exceptional care means. Read our community benefit report to learn more. You can also contact Anne Runyan at anne.runyan@eCommunity.com or 765-298-1025 if you’re interested in volunteering at the farm.
