Community Health Network, Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative hold vaccination clinic for people with sickle cell disease

For release on March 13, 2021

Community Health Network and Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative joined forces to provide COVID-19 vaccines to people with sickle cell disease during a single day clinic Saturday.

About one hundred doses were available to and up during the four-hour event held at Martin Center Sickle Cell Initiative offices on North College Avenue in Indianapolis. Fifty people registered ahead of the event.

"There’s been many times this past year we didn’t think we would make it spiritually, emotionally," said Lena Harvey, a sickle cell patient who brought her husband and son with her as she received the vaccine Saturday. "I just feel privileged and honored to be able to take the COVID-19 vaccine."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited blood cell disorder most common among the Black or African-American population. SCD affects nearly every organ system in the body and causes a lower life expectancy.

Based on results from a study by the Medical College of Wisconsin and the CDC, which show higher hospitalization, ICU admission and death among people with SCD and COVID-19, there is a need for people with sickle cell disease to take precautions against COVID-19.

"As a pharmacist, I encourage all of the population to get vaccinated, especially those who are at high risk," said Dawn Moore, Chief Pharmacy Officer for Community Health Network. "It is the safest and best course."
