Understanding Valvular Heart Disease

As we observe Valve Disease Awareness Day on February 22, it’s important to shine a light on the often under recognized but significant condition of valvular heart disease (VHD). This day serves as a reminder to educate, advocate for and support individuals affected by VHD, as well as highlight the ongoing efforts in research and healthcare to combat this common cardiovascular condition.

Understanding Valvular Heart Disease

Valvular heart disease includes a variety of conditions that affect the valves of the heart, impairing its ability to function properly. From congenital defects to age-related degeneration, VHD can manifest in various forms including aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation and tricuspid valve disorders.

Despite its prevalence and potential severity, VHD often goes undiagnosed or untreated until symptoms become noticeable. Individuals may attribute symptoms such as fatigue or shortness of breath to aging or other factors, and delay seeking medical attention until the disease progresses.

VHD can negatively impact quality of life by limiting the ability to perform daily activities and affecting emotional well-being. The burden can eventually extend to family or caregivers who provide support.

Valvular heart disease places a considerable strain on healthcare systems worldwide, from the costs associated with diagnosis and treatment to the demand for specialized care and resources. Addressing the growing prevalence of VHD requires a collaborative effort across healthcare disciplines, policymakers and advocacy organizations.

Despite the challenges, advances in medical technology and treatment modalities - such as transcatheter valve interventions and innovative pharmacotherapies - offer promising options for individuals with VHD. Early detection, timely intervention and access to comprehensive care are key to improve outcomes and reduce the burden of VHD on individuals and society.

Why Choose Heart Care with Community Health Network?

  • All patients are evaluated within our multidisciplinary valve clinic that includes interventional cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, structural imaging cardiologists, heart failure cardiologists and nurses.
  • Patient-centered approach to care.
  • Dedicated perioperative structural heart sonographers to assist with imaging throughout the procedure.
  • Consistent use of a minimalist approach: same-day admission to the hospital, lighter sedation administered by the anesthesiologist and an earlier ambulation to get patients back on their feet. This leads to safer, next day discharges for the majority of patients.
  • First to use Enhanced Recovery After Surgery approach to facilitate recovery and improve surgical outcomes.
  • Pre-operative nutrition screening and nutrition referrals to optimize recovery.

Raising Awareness for Valvular Heart Disease

As we commemorate Valve Disease Awareness Day, let us recommit to raising awareness, advocating for improved access to care, and supporting individuals and families affected by valvular heart disease. By working together, we can make strides in early detection, treatment and prevention, ultimately enhancing the lives of those who live with VHD.
