Community Health Network names medical director of stem cell transplant and cellular therapy program

Indianapolis—Community Health Network is pleased to announce Sherif Farag, MBBS, PhD, FRACP, FRCPA, FACP is the medical director of Community MD Anderson’s new stem cell transplant and cellular therapy program, opening at Community Howard Regional Health in 2024.

Dr. Farag has more than 30 years of medical experience with an extensive background in all areas of hematological cancers, transplantation and cellular therapies. His most recent position was at IU Health, where he was the director of the Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplantation and Immune Cell Therapy Program. He also served as the Kenneth Wiseman Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Farag is well published and has a deep commitment to advancing transplantation and cellular therapy research with more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and a strong record of NIH funding over the past 20 years.

Dr. Farag previously served as the medical director of the Blood and Bone Marrow Transplant Laboratory at the James Cancer Hospital and Richard Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. He was also an inspector for the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), among other accomplishments.

Dr. Farag received his MBBS and PhD from the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is a renowned speaker in both the national and international hematology community, with more than 36 invited speaker presentations. Dr. Farag has also held the rank of captain in the reserves of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps (RAAMC).

Community’s stem cell transplant and cellular therapy program, which was announced in late 2023, will align with the network goal of providing exceptional care, simply delivered. In partnership with MD Anderson, stem cell therapy will enhance the continuum of cancer care services provided within our network, treating cancers effectively and efficiently with the use of cutting-edge technologies, dedicated clinics, and facilities.

Dr. Farag will be temporarily based at Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo.
