Community Health Network achieves milestone as first in Indiana to implant WATCHMAN FLX Pro

For release on October 31, 2023

Indianapolis—Community Health Network is proud to announce it is the first healthcare system in Indiana to successfully implant the WATCHMAN FLX Pro device.

The WATCHMAN FLX Pro is a cutting-edge medical device designed to significantly reduce the risk of stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). Atrial fibrillation is a common heart rhythm disorder that can lead to blood clots, potentially resulting in stroke. The WATCHMAN FLX Pro offers a revolutionary alternative to long-term blood thinners for NVAF patients.

“Through our commitment to exceptional care and innovation, Community has earned a reputation as the go-to healthcare system for training future implanters,” said Dr. Michael Robertson, interventional cardiologist for Community Health Network. “This distinction sets our program apart, assuring our patients that we not only perform these procedures safely, but consistently achieve outstanding results.”

Key benefits of the WATCHMAN FLX Pro include:

  • Stroke Risk Reduction: The device seals off the left atrial appendage (LAA), where most stroke-causing blood clots in NVAF patients form, significantly reducing the risk of stroke.
  • Elimination of Long-term Blood Thinners: Patients who receive the WATCHMAN FLX Pro can often discontinue the need for long-term anticoagulant medication, which can carry its own set of risks and complications.
  • Improved Quality of Life: This innovative procedure improves the quality of life for patients by reducing the need for frequent monitoring and potential bleeding complications associated with blood thinners.

In addition, according to manufacturer, Boston Scientific, the enhanced device features HEMOCOAT™ technology to improve the healing process, radiopaque markers for precise device placement, and a new 40 mm size for larger appendages.

Dr. Krishna Malineni, a board-certified cardiologist at Community Health Network, said, "We are thrilled to be the first in Indiana to offer our patients this advanced treatment option. The WATCHMAN FLX Pro represents a major milestone in the management of atrial fibrillation, and we are committed to delivering the latest advancements in cardiovascular care to enhance health and well-being in our communities."
