For release on November 20, 2023

Expansion of cancer services reinforces commitment to bringing innovative treatment to Indiana and Midwest

INDIANAPOLIS—Community Health Network, a trusted healthcare provider in central Indiana, through its partnership with MD Anderson Cancer Center, one of the world’s premier cancer treatment institutions, is pleased to announce a significant expansion of its cancer care services, reinforcing its commitment to bringing innovative treatment close to home. Stem cell transplants and cellular therapy will be offered to Community Health Network MD Anderson Cancer Center patients beginning in 2024.

Stem cell transplants, often referred to as bone marrow transplants, are a lifeline for cancer patients facing life-threatening side effects from their treatments or immune deficiencies. This life-saving procedure involves replacing unhealthy bone marrow with healthy stem cells, which then develop into healthy marrow capable of producing various types of vital blood cells. Another significant advancement, CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell) therapy, allows for the manipulation of a patient’s own immune cells to treat cancer.

“Our approach to cancer care is marked by innovation and a commitment to a ‘patients first’ approach,” said Richard Funnell, Senior Vice President of Oncology Services for Community Health Network and President of Community MD Anderson. “With access to MD Anderson’s renowned expertise in stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy, we are ensuring our patients are receiving innovative treatment close to home, all while staying connected to their Community MD Anderson care team.”

MD Anderson’s Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Center is one of the largest and most advanced facilities in the world for stem cell transplants. Its clinicians perform more than 850 stem cell transplant procedures for both adults and children each year, surpassing any other center in the nation, and it is recognized as a specialized center for stem cell transplants by the National Marrow Donor Program.

Through the partnership, Community MD Anderson clinicians worked with MD Anderson’s experts to develop the program that now will provide an expanded continuum of cancer care services to patients in Central Indiana and extending Community’s reach to the broader Midwest.

The new program will be initially based at Community Howard Regional Health and will later expand to the Community Hospital North campus, with access extended to all Community MD Anderson cancer patients.
