In a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the stomach is altered to reduce food intake and change the digestion process. First, the top part of the stomach is stapled into a new pouch about the size of an egg. This reduces the amount of food that can be consumed during meals. The remainder of the stomach is not removed, but is completely stapled shut and divided from the stomach pouch. That part is then connected directly to the middle portion of the small intestine, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the upper portion of the small intestine where digestion normally takes place. This reduces the amount of fat and calories the body absorbs from food.
