Collection of sputum specimen

Please read instructions before collecting specimen.

  1. An early morning specimen is preferred since it contains pooled secretions from overnight.
  2. If possible, gargle with WATER before collecting specimen.
  3. Sputum is the thick material brought up from the lungs (not the back of the throat), after a deep cough. Spit this specimen directly into the container provided. Do not touch the specimen with your fingers or with a tissue.
  4. Do not submit a specimen of saliva or postnasal discharge. If the specimen if liquid or fairly thin, it is not sputum.
  5. For Acid Fast (TB) or Fungal testing, 10 mL of specimen is preferred (see the side of the container for volume marks). Five mL of specimen will be accepted if more cannot be collected.
  6. Take the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. If you cannot take the specimen in immediately, refrigerate it until you can. The specimen should be taken to the laboratory on the same day it is collected.
