Holter monitoring

Holter monitoring is used to diagnose abnormal heart rhythms. It continuously records your heart rhythm for 24 hours. This may also be done for a 48- or 72-hour period.

You should shower or bathe before your appointment because you cannot bathe while wearing the monitor. Please allow an hour for us to hook the monitor up to you. Five electrodes will be placed on your chest and wires will be attached to them (male patients may need to have some portions of their chest shaved for this). These wires lead to a small recorder that you will wear on a belt around your waist. This recorder will monitor and record every heartbeat you have for 24 hours. This recording is called an electrocardiogram, or ECG.

You will be given a diary to keep a record of your symptoms and activities. After the period of monitoring you will return and have the recorder taken off. This will take about 10 minutes. Please remember to return your diary. You cannot sleep under an electric blanket during the monitoring process.

A printout is made of the recording and read by a physician. The final results are sent to your doctor within a few days.

We are dedicated to making your testing experience a pleasant one. For more information, please call us at 765-453-8333
