Echocardiogram screening

For student athletes and young adults

Who is eligible?

Participants must be 10-25 years of age. Students under 18 need parent/guardian to sign consent form and consent form must be brought to the screening or it will not be done. Students must present a student ID card or driver’s license.

Why is this screening important?

This cardiovascular screening is designed to evaluate the potential risk of sudden death from a cardiac related abnormality such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (also known as IHSS/HC/HOCM) and Prolonged QT syndrome. It is important to understand that this special screening is limited in nature and does not evaluate for all potential cardiovascular conditions that could exist now or in the future including valvular abnormalities or coronary artery disease. This examination should not replace a complete cardiovascular examination if indicated by symptoms, murmur or your physician. If the screening results are abnormal you should immediately seek follow up care with your personal physician. This screen is limited to only cardiovascular care and does not evaluate for non-cardiovascular issues.

The cost of the screening is $25.00 per person. Payment must be made at time of service. Cash, credit card or personal check is accepted. No insurance billing is provided for screenings.

Examination process

The screening is a non-invasive procedure consisting of a 2D ultrasound and a resting 12 lead ECG. It will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. The participant will be asked to remove all clothing from the waist up in order for the ultrasound and ECG to be completed. Gowns will be available for female students. Parents are encouraged to be in the exam room.

The results will be mailed to the participant's home within 5-7 business days of the examination (Westview participants will receive results within 10-14 working days). The letter will state if the screening was normal or abnormal. It is the responsibility of the participant/parents to seek any follow up treatment needed from their personal physician.
