A heart scan provides pictures of your heart’s arteries (coronary arteries). Doctors use the scan to look for calcium deposits in the coronary arteries that can increase your heart attack risk. The result of this screening is often called a coronary calcium score. People who are most likely to benefit from having a heart scan are adults over 40 years of age who smoke, have high blood pressure, are diabetic, are obese, have high or borderline cholesterol, and/or have a family history of heart disease. A low-dose CT lung screening will show the lung tissue in high diagnostic detail to help you understand your risk for lung cancer. USPSTF guidelines and Medicare eligibility criteria recommend annual lung screenings for individuals ages 55 to 77 with a tobacco smoking history of at least 30 pack years.
