Not long ago women on the east side of Indianapolis who needed more than a routine mammogram had to head north or south. All that’s changed. Community Breast Care East now offers the full spectrum of breast care— mammography, ultrasound, genetic testing, diagnostics, biopsies, radiology, surgery and postoperative care. For the first time, patients on the east side can receive comprehensive breast care right in their own neighborhood.
“Patients come in, get diagnosed, evaluated and have a game plan put together for them right here,” said Robert J. Goulet Jr., M.D. “And that can all happen in a single visit.” Prior to joining the breast team at Community Breast Care East, Dr. Goulet served as medical director of the Breast Care and Research Center at IU Simon Cancer Center. A highly respected physician, he has been practicing in Indianapolis for more than 25 years.
When it comes to breast care health, one of the major barriers women face is inconvenient hours. Standard hours of operation aren’t convenient for women who work outside the home or stay-at-home moms with young children. That’s why Community Breast Care East is open from 12 to 8 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month—a first in the Indianapolis marketplace.
“Our program is a full-service program, which means that the services patients receive at 8 o’clock at night would be the same services they would receive at 9 o’clock in the morning,” Goulet said. “And that includes the amenities, such as free valet parking for patients. We’re very excited about introducing a program like this.”
Coordinated, cutting-edge care
One of the key components of the program for breast cancer patients is the nurse navigator. Patients with breast cancer have a team of specialists helping them—medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons. The nurse navigator is that constant companion who guides the patient through the process, ensuring everything is completed, goes smoothly and that the patient’s questions are addressed.
Commitment to excellence
Community Breast Care is the first comprehensive health network in Indiana to earn full accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. Community has an institutional commitment to excellence, innovation and education. “It’s more than just words,” Goulet said. “It is truly a commitment to the women that we serve here in Indianapolis and the surrounding areas.
That commitment filters down to the other members of the breast team—Chace Lottich, M.D.; Nate Thepjatri, M.D.; Erin Zusan, M.D. and Christina Kim, M.D.—all of whom are involved in research with different institutions. “For us, it’s not just getting up in the morning, coming into the office and then going home at night,” Goulet said. “It’s a full-time commitment.”
All these things come together to make Community Breast Care East light years ahead of other breast care centers. According to Goulet, Community Breast Care East has everything to “get his juices going.” He appreciates the opportunity to work in a receptive, responsive and reactive environment that allows him to have “the maximum impact in a relatively short period of time.” He especially loves the “remarkable community” it serves.
