"This year’s focus is on kidney cancer, specifically renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for 90 percent of cases. It is estimated that in 2009, there will be 57,760 new cases of kidney cancer and 12,980 deaths. These numbers include both adults and children. Most people with this cancer are older. It is very uncommon among people under age 45. Overall, the lifetime risk of getting kidney cancer is about 1 in 75. There are several subtypes of renal cell cancer, based mainly on how the cancer cells look under a microscope.
