Welcome!

Congratulations on your decision to pursue residency training! As a resident in our program, you will train in a community-based hospital and healthcare system. Our residents enjoy training opportunities in multiple settings including acute care hospitals, a specialty cardiology hospital, an extensive array of primary care and specialty care clinics, and the largest acute care behavioral care pavilion in the state.

Each program may afford the resident with an opportunity to pursue an academic experience with close faculty mentorship to lead case discussions and serve as a co-preceptor during the year.

We encourage you to communicate with our faculty/preceptors or residents. Our residents are our greatest assets, and for prospective applicants are often the best sources of insider information regarding our program. Experience has shown us that the more you get to know us, the more likely you will want to join our program.

PGY1 Pharmacy Residency

ASHP accredited pharmacy residencyThe pharmacy practice residency started in July 2002 and is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Each year, Community Health Network recruits four PGY1 pharmacy residents. The residency experience is shared among Community Hospital East, Community Hospital North, Community Hospital South and Community Heart and Vascular Hospital, all within our network of community-based hospitals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Residency training includes required practice experiences in general medicine, ambulatory care, drug information, critical care, cardiology, formulary management and practice management. The resident has a great deal of flexibility in selecting elective experiences, including infectious disease, behavioral care, emergency medicine, neonatal intensive care, oncology (outpatient or inpatient), as well as additional experiences in one of the required rotations. The resident also has the opportunity to be involved in a longitudinal academic rotation providing instruction to pharmacy students at Butler University College of Pharmacy. Other aspects of pharmacy practice in which our residents may become involved include formal and informal presentations, journal club, performance improvement initiatives, and mentorship of student pharmacists on rotation. Giving back to our community is a big part of our network’s mission; residents play a vital role in the Gennesaret Free Clinic and volunteer at the clinic throughout the year.

PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency

ASHP accredited pharmacy residencyThe psychiatric pharmacy PGY2 residency was founded in 2010 and is for PGY1 residency graduates who desire to become leaders in this specialty. Community Health Network offers the most comprehensive behavioral healthcare system in Indiana - including inpatient and outpatient services for youth (ages 5-18), adults and seniors. The behavioral care pavilion at Community Hospital North consists of nine units and is approximately 120 beds, allowing the resident to gain experience in multiple and diverse areas of behavioral care. Residents in this program are called upon to resolve real-life challenges and issues in a supportive and nurturing environment while working closely with the psychiatry residents, an integrated healthcare team consisting of attending psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, social workers, case managers, nursing and pharmacy, as well as students representing various disciplines.

Community Hospital North has four board-certified psychiatric pharmacists to provide support and a rich educational environment for the PGY2 to learn and grow throughout the year. Clinical opportunities integrating patient care with teaching, scholarship and service develop the resident into a well-rounded practitioner suited for many different professional career pathways. Working closely with academic affairs and the physician psychiatry residency program (see the Psychiatry Residency page), activities such as grand rounds, journal clubs as well as involvement with the scholarly activity and research committee allow the resident to develop and contribute to the profession through publication and presentation opportunities in original research, case reports, and/or patient safety/quality improvement. The resident is required to complete a project and present at the annual Multidisciplinary Scholarly Activity and Research Symposium with Community Health Network and is encouraged to present at either the ASHP Midyear or the American Association of Psychiatric Pharmacists annual meeting. Medication education groups for patients also help the PGY2 develop and refine patient counseling and education skills.

Opportunities at Butler University include leading both small (case conference) and large group didactics (therapeutics and elective opportunities), precepting and evaluating APPE rotation students, leading a monthly physician assistant student psychopharmacology review class, involvement with the BU student AAPP chapter, and participation in the academic leadership and administration rotations, amongst several other opportunities.

Upon completion of the residency the resident is expected to function with the knowledge, confidence and competence a leader is expected to show in this specialty area, as well as be equipped with the appropriate knowledge to pursue BCPP certification if the resident so chooses.

Required Rotations

  • Inpatient Psychiatry Residency Team Service – approximately 20-24 weeks/year, divided at the beginning, middle, and end of the residency year
  • Outpatient Psychiatry – 1 month
  • Academic Administration (Butler University) - 1 month
