Community Cancer Center South opens for patients, broadening scope of cancer treatment available for residents of South Central Indiana

For release: 4/17/2014

Phase One opening showcases first two floors of new facility

Indianapolis, IN---Community Cancer Center South, a free-standing cancer center on the campus of Community Hospital South, has opened for patients and offers a comprehensive and integrated approach to cancer care and treatment in South Central Indiana. The Phase One opening highlights the first two floors of the 65,000 square-foot facility.

“We are delighted to bring a comprehensive approach to cancer services in the south region,” said Myra Fouts, vice president of oncology services at Community Health Network. “Cancer patients will have the benefit of personalized treatment as they go through their cancer journey, with all services, treatments and providers in one location. Consumers from as far away as Columbus, Seymour, Shelbyville and Greensburg will now have greater access to exceptional cancer care.”

The new cancer center, a first for the region, offers patients world-class cancer care from a multidisciplinary team of certified medical experts, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and treatment protocols. Services available include:

  • 1st Floor: Registration, where patients will be welcomed and given an itinerary of their day’s appointments with volunteers to assist patients and help them to their next appointment; medical oncology infusion services, including 16 private, temperature-controlled infusion rooms; radiation oncology services, including physician practice space, private gowned waiting spaces, the True Beam™, a state-of-the-art Varian linear accelerator; Community Health Network’s first on-site PET/CT unit; a specialized oncology pharmacy and dedicated lab; and the FigLeaf Boutique, with a sole focus on specialty cancer items and a team of certified mastectomy fitters; and a large conference room with videoconferencing capabilities for health education and multidisciplinary tumor conferences
  •  2nd Floor: Physician practice space for medical oncology, specialty surgeons and exam rooms; patient navigators to help guide patients through their cancer experience; an integrative medicine suite; consultation rooms; conference rooms with videoconference capabilities and administrative offices; and space to incorporate clinical trials into Community’s high-quality care

Community Cancer Center South brings together all elements of cancer care in a healing environment, combined with an oncology-licensed clinical social worker and an oncology-specialized dietician, financial counseling, and integrative medicine as an option for patients. Current offerings include yoga, a breast cancer support group, and Look Good—Feel Better, a free national public service program through the American Cancer Society, which helps female cancer patients improve their appearance and self-image by teaching them hands-on beauty techniques to manage the esthetic side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also offered by the licensed clinical social worker. The oncology team will expand the integrative medicine program to include massage therapy, art therapy, music therapy, nutrition counseling, cooking classes, relaxation therapy and a quilting group. The cancer center plans to offer a survivorship program and additional patient support groups, including a men’s support group and a faith-based support group to all patients and their families.

“Like so many families, my family has also been touched by cancer,” said Indiana State Representative Dave Frizzell (R). “That’s why I’m so glad to see that families in our community will have access to world-class cancer care at Community Cancer Center South.”

“Community Health Network is showing its investment in South Central Indiana by building an outstanding full-service cancer center,” said Indiana State Senator Brent Waltz (R). “For the first time, consumers on the south side have one location to get everything they need to fight cancer.”

The cancer center opens in phases. The Infusion Center opened April 15. Radiation oncology opens May 5. The third floor of the cancer center opens in late summer and will house breast care services, including physician offices, exam rooms, patient navigators, and imaging services such as the 3T MRI, x-ray, ultrasound and 3D mammography.

The multidisciplinary and coordinated approach to care allows patients to see all of their cancer care providers ideally on the same day, under one roof, saving time and reducing the need for multiple appointments spread over several days. Advanced patient tracking technology allows the care team to predict and respond to each transition of patients during their treatment visit, reducing anxiety, wait times and ensuring a more timely and comfortable experience.
