Community Howard Regional Health adds robotic navigated spine surgery system

For release on May 09, 2019

Kokomo, IN—Community Howard Regional Health today announced the addition of a new robotic guidance platform to the hospital’s spine surgery program.

Community Howard was among the first 10 hospitals in the country to add the Mazor X Stealth Edition robotic guidance system earlier this year. The state-of-the-art robotics platform combines 3D pre-operative planning tools and analytics with intra-operative guidance, ensuring the highest level of precision and enhanced outcomes for patients.

“As a spine surgeon it is very exciting to add this world-class technology to our operating room here at Community Howard,” said Jason Alder, MD. “The level of precision that I can achieve with the robotic guidance system allows for surgeries to be less invasive, which results in a better outcome and faster recovery for my patients. Patients have been thrilled that we are able to offer this level of care here in Kokomo.”

The Mazor X preoperative planning technology gives the surgeon the ability to visualize a patient’s spine before surgery and plan out the best place for hardware to be placed. During the procedure the surgeon is able to direct the robotic navigational arm to the exact spot and angle for the pre-planned hardware placement.

Dr. Alder joined the Community Orthopedic Specialty Care practice in 2017. Dr. Alder is fellowship-trained in spine surgery from the Mayo Clinic and completed a five-year residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas.

“We have a mission at Community Howard to provide the highest levels of care right here in Kokomo,” said Joe Hooper, President of Community Howard Regional Health. “The addition of the Mazor X is another step in putting Community Howard at the forefront for advanced orthopedic care in this region. To be able to put this level of technology in the hands of a surgeon that trained in two of the best institutions in this country is a tremendous asset for the health and wellness of this community.”
