Earth, Wind & Fire to headline The Giving Gig 2018

Community Health Network Foundation event will benefit cancer patients facing financial struggles

Indianapolis, IN--Community Health Network Foundation officials have announced that seventh top-selling musical group of all-time Earth, Wind & Fire, will perform at The Giving Gig® 2018, the non-profit’s annual fundraising event to support Community Health Network’s cancer patients in financial need.

With more than 90 million albums sold worldwide, Earth, Wind & Fire has set the standard for music of all genres and continues to influence music and artists today. Their many hits include “Shining Star,” “September,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Sing a Song,” and “Let’s Groove.” The group has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and earned the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, as well as lifetime achievement honors from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASPCAP); the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the BET Awards.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s performance will conclude an evening of giving for the 1,036 attendees of The Giving Gig, which will be held February 17, 2018, at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. Given its popularity in recent years, The Giving Gig 2018 is expected to sell out, and proceeds will again benefit Community Health Network’s Oncology Patient Assistance Fund, which provides $250 vouchers for food, gas and medication to cancer patients in financial need.

Joyce Irwin, Community Health Network Foundation’s president and CEO, says the event supports tremendous need among cancer patients.

“No one budgets for cancer,” said Irwin. “The physical, mental and emotional impacts can be overwhelming on their own, but they are compounded by the financial burden of cancer. Too often, we hear of patients who can no longer work because of treatment or who are making the choice between their health and putting food on the table. The Oncology Patient Assistance Fund is for each of them, and it is made possible thanks to donors at The Giving Gig. We look forward to joining members of our community at The Giving Gig 2018 for a fun-filled and meaningful evening of giving.”

In 2017, the event raised $1.7 million in support of the cause. Foundation officials anticipate funds raised at the 2018 event will meet the overarching $5 million goal set forth when the Oncology Patient Assistance Fund was established in 2014, creating a self-sustaining endowment that will forever help Community’s cancer patients.

Those dollars translate into direct impact for Community’s cancer fighters and their families, explains John Williams, a Stage IV lung cancer patient at Community Hospital East, and his wife Vicki. A photo of the couple can be found attached.

“We went in with no expectations,” said Vicki. “As it turned out, there was a team of financial navigators thinking through everything and figuring out how to help us. We’re not wealthy people; we’re on a fixed income, and, at times, we’ll pay our bills and there is nothing left for groceries or gas.”

“We weren’t asking for help,” added John. “Those vouchers came in perfectly because they supplemented us during a time that we had a lot of things coming at us. It was like someone who was in the desert who suddenly found a big bottle of ice cold water.”

As in 2017, The Giving Gig 2018 is presented by Alderson Commercial Group.

A table accommodating 10 guests is $5,000, a VIP couple’s package is available for $1,750 and individual tickets cost $500. All guests will enjoy a cocktail reception and silent auction, a four-course gourmet dinner, a live auction and dancing during the concert. In addition, those purchasing the VIP package will receive complimentary valet parking, access to an exclusive after party, an overnight stay at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott and premium gifts donated by local and national retailers.
