Community Health Network employee volunteers to spruce up IPS Washington Irving School #14 during United Way of Central Indiana's Day of Caring

Nearly 200 Community volunteers expected at August 23rd event

Indianapolis, IN---Nearly 200 Community Health Network employee volunteers will roll up their sleeves August 23rd to make improvements at IPS Washington Irving School #14, part of this year’s United Way of Central Indiana Day of Caring. Community is a premier sponsor of the Day of Caring. The employee volunteers participate in Community’s Serve 360° initiative, which fosters volunteerism and aims to give back to the local community.

“Community Health Network Serve360˚ volunteers are thrilled to have the opportunity to partner again with IPS School #14, the site of our first United Way Day of Caring two years ago,” said Carrie Wilson, human resources special projects director at Community. “School #14 plays such a vital role in supporting its students, families, and community. We are honored to play a small part in that, giving back through our Day of Caring volunteer efforts.”

IPS School #14 is undergoing renovations this summer and fall, but will remain accessible to offer resources for parents in the neighborhood and for weekly food pantry distribution. During the renovation, students will attend classes at IPS School #98. An annual back-to-school carnival for students and their families will be held at School #14 and hosted by staff and the PTA on August 23rd.

For this year’s Day of Caring, Community’s volunteers are tackling multiple projects at School #14, including:

• Gardening work (digging dirt, moving mulch, trimming shrubs)
• Trash pickup around garden beds and playgrounds
• Playground equipment rehab, including replacing the seating structure around the Learning Tree in the small playground
• Preparation for the school carnival and folding/sorting clothes for the uniform pantry
• Set-up and tear down of the school carnival
• Delivery of food pantry items and school supplies to families

“Day of Caring shows the LIVE UNITED movement at its best,” said Ann D. Murtlow, president and chief executive officer of United Way of Central Indiana. “It’s a budget-saving way for nonprofits to get important jobs done. It’s a way for volunteers to make a difference and have fun too. It also gives companies team-building opportunities that benefit us all. And, it helps us create the kind of community we all want to live in.”

IPS School #14 is located at 1250 E. Market Street in Indianapolis. Shift times for Community employees are 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.; noon to 3:00 p.m.; and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The school carnival is from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
