Indianapolis, IN---Community Health Network recently began construction on one of two new hybrid operating rooms at The Indiana Heart Hospital, which is located on the Community Hospital North campus. The new room will feature innovative technology to accommodate the latest minimally-invasive procedures, while also allowing for standard procedures when needed.
The new operating room will enhance and expand minimally-invasive capabilities currently in existence at the heart hospital. Each surgical suite will be equipped with movable, ceiling-mounted x-ray machines, an upgrade of the C-arm technology that is currently in use. Using high-definition images, surgeons can perform surgery with smaller incisions, using less-invasive techniques, as an alternative to more open, conventional surgeries. The hybrid nature of the room allows a surgeon to work beside a specialist without transferring the patient to another operating room.
The hybrid operating room will commonly be used to fix and replace heart valves, place stents in hardened vessels, and correct abnormal heartbeats. Using minimally-invasive methods offers several benefits to patients, including:
Even if the situation requires the surgeon to shift to an invasive approach mid-procedure, there are benefits to the patient. Keeping the patient in one room reduces surgical time, which in turn reduces anesthesia time and infection rates, since all tubes and equipment can remain in place.
The hybrid operating rooms also create the potential to add multi-disciplinary procedures in the future. “We continue to explore the most advanced means of care for our patients,” stated Tom Malasto, CEO of The Indiana Heart Hospital and COO of Community Hospitals of Indianapolis. “With this expansion, we can increase the scope of procedures to further revolutionize and deliver the best in cardiovascular care.”
The $6.9 million, 4,600-square-foot expansion will be completed in phases, with the first operating room scheduled to open in January 2013.
