According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for nearly half of all cancers in the United States.  More than 2 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancer are found in this country each year; melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 75,000 cases of skin cancer in 2012. The ACS recommends a cancer related checkup by a physician, including skin examination, for people ages 20 or older.

Health experts recommend the following tips for preventing skin cancer:

  • Limit or avoid exposure to the sun during midday hours (10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.)
  • Wear a hat that shades the face, neck and ears when outdoors
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to protect skin from the sun
  • Wear sunglasses to protect the skin around the eyes
  • Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher
