Shelbourne Knee Center to relocate on the Community Westview campus

For release on March 03, 2015

Indianapolis, IN—K. Donald Shelbourne, M.D., world renowned leader in total knee care, will move his downtown practice, Shelbourne Knee Center, to the Community Westview campus. His colleague, Rodney Benner, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon, will join him. The Shelbourne Knee Center will be located inside Community Westview Hospital and will officially open later in the spring.

“Dr. Shelbourne, with his longtime work in knee care of over 30 years, brings the expertise and experience of an evidence-based practice through the research component he has developed, which drives his excellent outcomes,” said David Williams, D.O., president and CEO of Community Health Network’s West Region. “His philosophy of care is highly regarded as instrumental in contributing to better patient health and sustainable wellness. Community Health Network’s relationship with the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Nursing will also be enhanced, due to the Shelbourne Knee Center’s close involvement in the education of medical students, nurses and residents.”

Shelbourne Knee Center, established in 2004 and Indiana’s only dedicated knee center, includes clinic, surgery, physical therapy and a research department. The center will relocate to the first floor of Community Westview’s northeast quadrant, in approximately 15,000 square feet of space. That portion of the hospital will be renovated to accommodate the center and will include physician office space, a physical therapy room, imaging and a research area. Renovation begins immediately and is expected to be completed in early June, when the physicians will begin seeing patients.

“I’ve been practicing orthopedics for more than thirty years, and I am as excited now as when I first started, said Dr. Shelbourne. “Moving the Shelbourne Knee Center to Community Westview Hospital will allow us to reach and help more patients. Our treatment philosophy dovetails nicely with the hospital’s overall focus on preventative care. We are enthusiastic about our shared future and what this means for our patients.”

Dr. Shelbourne began his orthopedic practice in 1982, pursuing knee problems as a specialty. Shelbourne Knee Center has a strong focus on research, tracking outcomes of surgical and non-surgical patients. Dr. Shelbourne has performed more than 6,000 ACL reconstruction surgeries and more than 8,000 knee arthroscopies. He is best known for establishing the Accelerated ACL Reconstruction Rehabilitation Protocol. He received his medical degree and completed his orthopedic residency at Indiana University Medical School. Dr. Shelbourne completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.
