Howard Regional Health System board approves new affiliation with Community Health Network

For release on May 10, 2012

Kokomo, IN--- This week, the Howard Regional Health System Board of Trustees passed resolutions approving an affiliation with Community Health Network, one of Central Indiana’s largest healthcare systems. The affiliation is subject to final approval from the Howard County Board of Commissioners and County Council, which are expected to meet on May 22. If approved, the affiliation is expected to begin on July 1.

“The expanded resources this affiliation will bring to North Central Indiana will allow us to continue to provide the comprehensive range of services close to home that our patients and their families have come to expect,” said James P. Alender, Howard president and CEO. “Over the years, we have worked diligently to meet community healthcare needs right here. It was very important to our board that we could maintain this, while continuing to benefit our local economy from our large employee base.”

Howard Regional Health System is currently the third largest employer in Howard County.

Howard will retain its local governance and staff, while benefiting from growth and network support of its clinical services, enhanced access to primary and specialty care, capital, and pipelines for physician and employee recruitment.

For Community, affiliation with Howard is a natural alignment with each of its primary service areas. Plans call for developing and implementing a regional health plan that would enhance access to convenient healthcare for Howard County residents and those of surrounding counties.

“We are pleased to offer the Kokomo community increased access to convenient, high-quality healthcare, while keeping healthcare local,” said Bryan Mills, president and CEO of Community Health Network. “Our healthcare organizations have a shared vision of putting patients first and a deep commitment to the communities we serve.”

Community and Howard have partnered since 2001, when the Indiana Surgery Center Kokomo opened on the Howard Regional Health System campus. The center was the first hospital-based, free-standing outpatient surgery facility in the region.
