Services

Overnight and daytime testing is performed on an outpatient basis at our state-of-the-art sleep center. Patients are monitored in comfortable, private rooms, equipped with a Comfort Select Sleep Number bed, TV/DVD player, and a private bath. This is painless and non-invasive, as we do not use any needles or drugs. Our equipment and monitors are located in a control room, collecting brain activity, muscle tone, heart rate, breathing patterns, oxygen levels, body position and movement, and snoring as you sleep.

We also offer outpatient, home-based, preliminary testing to assist in the decision making for the progression of a patient’s care.

Sleep testing requires a physician’s referral. If you do not have a physician to refer you, you can Find a Doctor online.

Outpatient Testing at the Sleep Disorder Center

On the Day of Your Test

  • Fill out all patient information forms and bring them with you.
  • Remain awake during the day of the study.
  • If you take prescription medications, please bring them with you in the original container(s) so they may be taken on schedule.
  • Please bathe and shampoo your hair before coming to the sleep center. Do NOT put any conditioners, hair spray, or oils on your hair so electrodes may be applied to your scalp.
  • Please have your evening meal before arriving for the sleep study.
  • Do NOT drink alcoholic beverages or beverages with caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.) on the day of the study.
  • Bring sleepwear with you. Comfortable shorts and T-shirt are acceptable. Please do NOT bring silk or slippery sleepwear.
  • If you are a current CPAP/BiPAP/ASV/AVAPS user, please bring your mask with you.

What to Expect

When you arrive, the sleep center technician will apply several electrodes and sensors to your head and other parts of your body. You will be allowed to sleep in a private room, and the technician will be present all night to monitor breathing, heart rate, brain wave activity, and body movements during sleep. The test will take a minimum of six hours and after the sleep study is completed, you will be able to leave if no other testing is required. If you are staying for a daytime test, breakfast and lunch will be provided.

You will be contacted 24-48 hours prior to your study to confirm your appointment. At that time, please let us know if there have been any changes in your health, medications, etc. If you have any special needs we need to be aware of, please call 765-298-5455. You should reschedule if you have a cold, the flu, or active infection.

You should receive a packet in the mail containing an instruction letter, a questionnaire, and a sleep log prior to your testing. Please start tracking your sleep via your sleep log as soon as you receive your packet. This information will aid in your diagnosis and treatment.

Sleep Test Results

Your test results will be analyzed by a board-certified sleep specialist. The results will be sent to the physician who referred you to the center approximately one week after your test.

Home Sleep Test

Out-of-Center Sleep Testing, or OCST, is an at-home sleep assessment indicated for adults with high pre-test probability of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), patients whose immobility prevents in-center testing, or monitoring patients’ response to non-CPAP treatments for OSA, including oral appliances, upper airway surgery and weight loss.

Patient Screening

The patient must have a face-to-face clinical evaluation by the treating physician prior to the sleep test to assess the patient for OSA. In addition to the physical examination, there are several validated screening questionnaires available to determine if a patient is a candidate for OCST.

Testing Process

The testing is performed using an unattended Type III portable monitoring sleep study device which will monitor for OSA. Parameters that are measured include simultaneous airflow, respiratory events, pulse rate, oxygen saturation, head position/movement, arousal indicators, snoring, sleep/wake, REM/NREM, apnea/hypopnea index and sleep time.

Scheduling

A physician’s order for a home sleep test with the number of testing nights (one to three nights) is required to schedule an OCST. The patient’s history, a physical, and the face-to-face clinical evaluation notes from the office visit must also be provided.

On the Day of Your Home Sleep Test

  • Pick up your home sleep study device.
  • Sleep in your normal sleeping attire, and plan to go to bed at your normal bedtime.
  • Remain awake the day of the study.
  • Do NOT drink alcoholic beverages with caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc.) the day of the study.
  • If you take prescription medications, follow your normal schedule.
  • Follow the directions for putting on the home sleep study device provided by the Sleep Disorder Center of Community Hospital Anderson.

Test Results

After the OCST is completed, a sleep specialist will review the recorded sleep data and provide treatment recommendations. In addition to breathing data, the OCST device gathers additional physiological data that, together with other clinical history and physical data, helps the doctor diagnose sleep conditions. Your test results will be reviewed by a board certified sleep specialist, and results will be sent to the physician who referred you to the center approximately two weeks after the test.
