Respiratory Care Clinic

Clinic Goals

The Respiratory Care Clinic of Community Hospital Anderson is staffed by nurse practitioners, registered nurses and respiratory therapists who work directly with your physicians. Program goals are to improve quality of life and reduce hospital and emergency department visits for patients with COPD by:

  • Providing tailored education for improving self-management of COPD
  • Offering timely hospital admission follow-up to prevent unnecessary readmissions
  • Serving as an alternative to emergency department visits for patients who are experiencing worsening symptoms due to illness and flares

What Is COPD?

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a term used to describe progressing lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis and refractory (non-reversible) asthma.

With COPD, airways in your lungs are obstructed or blocked due to extra mucus or swelling, making it difficult to breathe. Airways can also lose elasticity, causing air to get trapped. Over time, shortness of breath usually worsens, making it increasingly more difficult to care for yourself or participate in routine daily activities.

While COPD is not curable, symptoms can be treated to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of complications.
