Make Lung Health a Priority During COVID-19

As our global community continues to persevere against COVID-19, we want to remind you of one thing: you are still in control of your health. The steps you take today can keep you healthy in the face of this novel disease, and it goes beyond washing your hands, avoiding touching your face and staying home.

Keith McEwen, MD of Community Bariatric Services - Hamilton has a crucial message for those looking to take steps for their health: "Now more than ever, pay attention to your lungs."

Why Focus on Lung Health?

As you’ve likely heard, COVID-19 is a respiratory disease. The novel coronavirus targets the lungs and causes symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath. In most cases these symptoms are mild, but they can become life-threatening in severe cases. The disease can potentially lead to lung failure and the need for a mechanical ventilator.

“Lung health is so critical during this pandemic,” says Dr. McEwen. “Anything that improves your lungs and overall health improves your chance of fighting off this disease."

Help Your Lung Health

Whether you’re looking to make a grand gesture or take a small step, here are some ideas for your continued lung health:

  • Wash your hands — Just washing your hands with warm, soapy water for 20 seconds can greatly reduce your risk for lung infections. It’s such a simple step for your health, so remember to wash frequently throughout the day.
  • Try to maintain a healthy weight — “It’s not easy with all this stress,” says Dr. McEwen. “But there's a correlation between your weight and your lung health.” Try to stay active and avoid the “quarantine 15” – sudden weight gain from the shift to a more sedentary lifestyle.
  • Make time for exercise — You don’t need to be a gym rat to enjoy the benefits of a good workout. Try walking the neighborhood at a brisk pace for half an hour, four or five times a week. “Even a simple activity like walking can strengthen your lungs. Just remember to practice social distancing,” says Dr. McEwen.
  • Stop smoking — Whether it’s cigarettes or vaping, smoking hinders your lungs’ ability to fight off infections. You’ll notice plenty of other health benefits, too. “There’s never been a better time to stop smoking,” says Dr. McEwen.
  • Ask your provider — Even though walk-in appointments are temporarily unavailable, you’re not isolated from exceptional care. “If you have any questions about your lung health or overall wellness, call your medical team. Take a Breather

If you have just one spare minute, you have enough time to make a difference for your lung health. Here’s a simple breathing exercise from Dr. McEwen:

  1. While standing or sitting, draw your elbows back slightly toward your spine. Allow your chest to expand.
  2. Take a deep inhalation through your nose, counting to five as you do so.
  3. Hold your breath for five seconds.
  4. Slowly release your breath through your nose, counting to five as you do so.
  5. Repeat these steps five times in a row.

Try to do this exercise at least five times each day. “If you have a smart watch, pay attention to those notifications to breathe,” Dr. McEwen advises. “They’re a great reminder to take time for your lungs!"
