COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
Hear why Community caregivers believe that it is important to be vaccinated to protect not only themselves, but also the community.
When can I get the COVID-19 vaccine?
We are working hard on obtaining and optimizing the process of COVID-19 vaccine delivery to our caregivers and patients. Following guidelines from the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), the vaccine is being prioritized for healthcare workers in long-term care facilities, front line healthcare workers, licensed healthcare workers, and those who handle infectious disease materials and/or who care for patients. These groups will be in the first tier of vaccination.
As of 1/13/21, any Hoosier age 70 or older is eligible to schedule a vaccination appointment. To make an appointment, visit https://vaccine.coronavirus.in.gov. Please note you must have an appointment to receive the vaccine. If you experience a wait time online, please try the link again later or call 211 for phone assistance.

What can I expect at my vaccine appointment?
Where do I go for my vaccine?
Our caregivers are operating vaccine clinics at four locations: Community Hospitals North, East, South and Anderson. An appointment is required. When you schedule your appointment (online at ourshot.in.gov or by calling 211), it will indicate which location you should go to.
Where do I park?
All hospitals have free parking available onsite. Community Hospital North and Community Hospital East have both surface and garage parking available.
Is valet parking available?
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are not able to offer valet parking at this time.
Will someone be there to assist if my mobility is limited?
Upon arrival at the hospital, caregivers are available to escort you to the vaccine clinic. Wheelchairs can also be requested upon arrival.
Can someone (a family member, spouse, etc.) accompany me to my appointment?
Currently, anyone who needs assistance is allowed to have a support person escort them to and from the vaccine clinic.
When should I arrive?
Please arrive no earlier than ten minutes before your scheduled appointment, to help maintain safety protocols and keep wait times to a minimum.
What happens at my appointment?
We ask that you arrive with a homemade mask or face covering that covers your nose and mouth. Upon your arrival, we will provide a surgical mask that increases both your protection and our caregivers’ protection. Next, you will go through a brief screening for COVID-19 symptoms. You’ll then be directed to the vaccine clinic for your scheduled appointment. At the clinic you will check in, receive the vaccine, and wait for a 15-minute observation period. Total time should be less than 30 minutes from arrival.
What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?
Please call 211 to schedule a new date/time for your appointment or visit ourshot.in.gov. No walk-in appointments are accepted.
What side effects could I experience?
The most common side effects are arm pain, headache, muscle aches and a low-grade fever for approximately 24-48 hours. These reactions can mean the vaccine is working to help teach your body how to fight COVID-19 if you are exposed in the future.
Do I still need to wear a mask after receiving the vaccine?
Yes, it is very important to continue wearing a mask after receiving the vaccine. You should also continue to practice social distancing, wash your hands often and stay home if you are sick. Getting vaccinated is just part of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
How do I schedule my second vaccine?
Your second vaccine appointment will be scheduled when you are at the clinic and receiving your first vaccine. It is important to return and receive your second dose to have the full effects of the vaccination.
Do I receive the second vaccine at the same location?
It is recommended that you receive the second vaccine at the same location where your first vaccine was administered.
Will this vaccine work against the new strain of COVID-19 that I’ve seen on the news?
Yes, the vaccines that have been approved by the FDA and are being administered are effective in fighting new strains of COVID-19. Vaccination is still one of the best tools we have in preventing infection and the spread of COVID-19.
Will I be told which type/brand of vaccine I receive?
Yes, you will be told the name of the vaccine you receive, and your second appointment will be scheduled accordingly so you receive the same type/brand of vaccine at your second appointment.
Is the COVID-19 vaccine effective?
Pfizer received emergency use authorization (EUA) on December 10, 2020. Moderna received EUA on December 18, 2020. Both reported 95% efficacy, or effectiveness, in trial studies of more than 70,000 people.
Is the COVID-19 vaccine safe?
Studies to date indicate the vaccine is safe for the majority of people, based on trial studies. Short-term side effects reported included soreness at injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle ache and joint pain. Any side effects would typically occur within one to three days of injection and would last less than 24 hours. The COVID-19 vaccine is not a live vaccine, which means you cannot get COVID-19 from the vaccine.
- Currently, there are no contraindications for people with the following health conditions, and vaccination would still be encouraged:
- Patients receiving chemotherapy
- People with autoimmune diseases
- People with shingles, or in the middle of a two-dose shingles vaccine
- Women of childbearing years
- Women who are trying to conceive
- The vaccine is not recommended for those who suffer from severe allergic reactions, or children under the age of 16.

How many doses do I need?
The vaccination is a two-tier dose. After the first dose, a second follow-up appointment will need to be made in 21 days for Pfizer and 28 days for Moderna. Your care team will work with you to schedule this.
Can I choose which vaccine I want?
At this time, caregivers and patients (when available) will not be provided a choice of which vaccine they receive (Pfizer or Moderna) and it will be based on availability at the time of administration.
How much does the COVID-19 vaccine cost?
The vaccine will be free, but your insurance information will be collected.
I tested positive for COVID-19. When can I get the vaccine?
If you have tested posted for COVID-19, it is recommended you wait at least 90 days before receiving vaccination. This is so that we can provide the vaccine to those who have no antibodies.
If you are diagnosed with a COVID-19 positive test after receiving the first dose of vaccination, it is recommended that you still receive the second dose at the scheduled time.
What precautions should I take after vaccination?
Continue to follow safety protocols such as wearing a mask, social distancing and hand hygiene after vaccination as it is undetermined if the vaccine prevents spread of the virus from a person who is vaccinated to a person who is not.
