What Is a Hernia?

We’ve all heard of them, but do you actually know what a hernia is and how it is treated? There are many types of hernias, but a hernia is essentially when an internal part of the body pushes through the muscles of the abdominal wall. This could be fat, intestines or muscles. Many people may not be aware that they have one, and it can often be found when getting diagnosed for another issue.

It’s important to understand the symptoms of hernias and where to seek treatment for hernia repair.

Types of Hernias

The most common hernia types include:

  • Inguinal hernia - in the groin
  • Hiatal hernia - in the diaphragm
  • Umbilicus hernia - in the belly button

Common Hernia Symptoms

  • Protruding bulge that occurs when coughing, sneezing, bending over or lifting heavy objects
  • Burning or aching at the bulge
  • Pain or discomfort in the abdomen or groin
  • Heavy sensation in your groin or abdomen
  • Weakness or pressure in the groin

When to Seek Hernia Repair Treatment

It’s always best to take care of the issue sooner than later. If you wait too long, you could end up with a trapped hernia, or an incarcerated hernia. This can result in a strangulated hernia that cuts off blood flow to the tissue that is trapped. This can be life-threatening if not treated.

Seek treatment immediately if you:

  • Have a hernia and are vomiting
  • Have developed fever
  • Have sudden pain that intensifies
  • Have a hernia that has turned red, purple or darker in color
  • Are unable to pass gas or a bowel movement
