Find Support Through Bariatric and Medical Weight Loss

As the new year approaches, many people begin to set personal goals. A common New Year’s resolution is to make healthy choices and lose weight. It’s important to remember that losing weight is not just about how you look, but achieving a healthy and active life. 70 percent of U.S. healthcare costs are linked to obesity-related diseases, and could potentially be avoided. They include:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep apnea
  • Hypertension
  • Depression
  • Several different types of cancer
  • Joint pain
  • Reduced fertility

Community’s bariatric surgery and medical weight loss services can help you to find the right plan for your weight loss journey. There are many factors to consider before beginning your weight loss journey. How can you know which plan is right for you?

When is Surgical Weight Loss the Right Approach?

To be a surgical weight loss candidate, you must have a BMI of over 40, or a BMI over 35 with an associated medical disease. Typically this means that you want to lose around 100 pounds. Surgery works because it helps facilitate diet. Your diet, portion sizes and other behavioral factors will determine the success of the surgery. Your doctor will continue follow-up care for post-operative discussions, nutrition, fitness and other lifestyle changes.

The most common types of gastric surgeries are:

"As a bariatric surgeon, the most rewarding part of my job is when a patient comes to me after surgery and tells me about how they were able to play with their children and/or grandchildren, or get on a rollercoaster for the first time in years,” says Myungwon Chang, MD, FACS.  “I feel so lucky to have been a part of their journey and inspired by their stories to continue helping my patients reach their weight loss goals and become healthier and happier."

If you are looking for help with weight loss but are not a surgical candidate, our bariatric team can still help with medical weight loss techniques.

Medical Weight Loss to Lose 10% of Your Body Weight

Someone who has a BMI less than 35 and has a goal of losing approximately 5-10% of their body weight is an ideal candidate for medical weight loss. Because losing weight is no easy task, we often see patients back every two weeks for accountability and to provide support including personalized meal plans, dietitians and weight loss medication (at your physician's discretion).
