The Benefits of Breastfeeding

You’ve probably heard how breastfeeding can boost your baby’s immune system, provide protection against some diseases and promote brain development. But, did you know that breastfeeding has health benefits for both mom and baby?

Breastfeeding Has Benefits for You and Baby

Skin-to-skin contact and bonding time are an added bonus of breastfeeding. In addition, breastfeeding can have an impact on your body. For example, breastfeeding can burn up to 500 calories a day—helping you with natural weight management. And, breast milk helps baby gain weight at a healthy pace.

Breastfeeding also releases oxytocin, which helps your uterus return to its normal size. And, it reduces your risk of breast cancer.

Find Breastfeeding Support

Some may say that breastfeeding is “natural,” but that doesn’t always mean it’s easy. Sometimes, babies can have trouble latching or their milk consumption may not match the mother’s milk production.

If breastfeeding doesn’t come “naturally,” don’t be hard on yourself. You and baby need time to explore what works best.
