How to Stay Healthy on the Road

Spring, summer or fall, a road trip makes for a fun family vacation. This time of year you might be itching to pack your suitcase and hit the road. Here are some travel essentials to pack for a safe and healthy trip.

Charge Up

Your phone charger is probably the first thing you packed, but make sure to bring what your body needs to stay powered up too. Snackable fruits and vegetables will keep you energized, and you can easily fit in them in even the most stuffed luggage.

These healthy snacks can come in handy even after your arrival. Vacations usually mean dining out frequently, where fruits and vegetables may not be plentiful. Start your day by eating an apple, a banana or other fruits, and snack on portable veggies like carrots or snap peas.

Beat the Elements

Sunscreen and sunglasses are a no-brainer for summer days out in the sun. No matter what SPF you choose, the most important factor to avoiding a burn is to apply sunscreen well. Have a friend get your back, and make sure to get behind your ears. If you’re going to the beach or the swimming pool, keep in mind how long your water-resistant or waterproof sunscreen lasts.

When the sun is not out, you’ll need to prepare for inclement weather. Small umbrellas and ponchos don’t take up much space in a suitcase, and can save you from spending a day indoors. Even if bad weather doesn’t strike, nights can get chilly, so be sure to include a lightweight jacket to keep you warm.

Be Prepared

It’s not pleasant to think about during vacation, but accidents do happen. A small first aid kit can help keep you and your family on track for fun.

Some helpful items to have in your first aid kit include the following:

  • Bandages
  • Antiseptic
  • Allergy medications
  • Ibuprofen
  • Bug spray
  • Above all else, make sure you pack your health insurance card (Just in case!)

Don’t hesitate to consult a medical professional if you suffer a severe injury. Remember you can always do a virtual visit on the road, in a hotel room or wherever you’re staying.

No matter where you’re heading for vacation, keeping your health in mind makes for a much more enjoyable trip. Learn more tips for safe, healthy travels.
