Holiday treats at the office can be fun, but also high in sugar.

Avoid the Office Holiday Treat Trap

Everyone struggles with their diet during the holiday season. With many small parties and family feasts packed into a six-week barrage of festivities, it’s no wonder that many people will find themselves a few pounds heavier in the new year.

As if making healthy lifestyle choices weren’t tough enough during the holiday months, often, kind-hearted co-workers will bring their treats to the office. While we do not want to put a damper on anyone’s holiday spirit, we do want to help you make healthier choices. Here are five ways you can avoid the holiday treat trap in your office this December.

1) Bring Your Own Healthy Options

Are you not seeing what you want in the break room? Bring bruschetta, veggies and dip, or fruit and cheese plates to share with your teammates. A bowl of mixed nuts (not honey roasted) is a simple and healthier alternative.

2) Think About Small Choices

The difference between fat-free kettle corn and caramel corn can add up! So, too, can the difference between a store-bought cookie loaded with sugar and preservatives or a homemade oatmeal raisin cookie. Remember to eat fewer sugary snacks, and when you do eat them, try to choose wisely.

3) Don’t Forget About Lunch

Maybe the best way to fight the holiday cookie tray is to make sure you’re not hungry. A healthy lunch with lean proteins and whole wheat bread can fill you up and keep you full, so you won’t even want to walk into the break room.

4) Find an Ally

No doubt there is another officemate worried about adding a few pounds during December. So make a pact that you will take a walk together instead of partaking in sugary snacks. It is much easier to be healthy when you have someone holding you accountable.

5) Don’t Get Down

Most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself. Try to remain positive and focused on making good decisions even after you enjoy a holiday treat. The worst thing you can do is decide you’ve broken your goal and so you may as well just go all-in. The time is always right to think healthy eating.
