Special Programs

Residents of Community South Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency program have the opportunity to participate in medical conferences, teach medical students, attend out-of-town retreats and learn about more specialized topics of interest to practice.

Education Conferences

Every week, residents and faculty meet for one full afternoon to learn about pertinent topics in family medicine. In addition to medical topics, which run the gamut of family medicine, areas covered include OMT, behavioral science, medical ethics, complimentary/integrative medicine, practice management, and organized medicine. Presenters include full-time faculty, specialists practicing at Community hospitals, residents, and various speakers from the community.

Behavioral Science

The behavioral science program attempts to help residents gain a better understanding of their patients and themselves–to improve both physician satisfaction and the quality of patient care. Conferences serve as the didactic forum, but the full-time availability of a behavioral faculty and social worker in the patient care area allows teaching in the context of patient contacts. The behavioral faculty is also available to the residents for individual assistance and stress management as needed.

Retreats

Each year there is a residency retreat that encourages personal growth and residency improvement. Residents and faculty are required to attend; families are invited as well.

Medical Student Teaching

Residents can participate in teaching medical students from first- to fourth-year. These opportunities include educational lectures, hands-on demonstrations and supervising students on clinical rotations.

Sports Medicine Track

Residents interested in developing their sports medicine skills have the opportunity to work with Dr. Kiefer to build these skills as well as develop a sports medicine fellowship resumé. Experiences include sports ultrasound training, progressive independence on sidelines at high school, college, and professional levels, as well as pre-participation physicals.
