Health System Diversity Statement
October 22, 2020 — Three of Central Indiana’s largest health systems - Community Health Network, Eskenazi Health and Indiana University Health - are pledging to do more to end health disparities and inequity in minority communities, calling systemic racism a public health crisis. The health systems, which have worked closely together to address the COVID-19 pandemic, have committed to a series of actions to advance their work.
How We Work to Advance Diversity
We develop cultural competency skills in our caregivers so they can better relate to patients and each other. Increased knowledge and communication are one of the many ways we develop culturally-competent care.
Recruitment and talent acquisition efforts work to ensure that our workforce is representative of the communities we serve.
Partnering with local organizations creates leadership development, business skill and career planning opportunities for youth with disabilities to help them transition to meaningful employment opportunities.
Community Health Network has medical interpreters - available at no cost 24/7 - to assist patients, their family members, and other legally authorized persons with verbal and written interpretation in clinical settings and more.
Among Community's numerous innovative initiatives for supporting diversity is the network's Diversity Champions program, created to identify, train and encourage additional diversity representatives at each of the numerous Community locations.
The program kicked off in 2007, with approximately 75 employees, managers and directors from across the network identified as "champions" for diversity.
Together, the champions focus on awareness, interaction and acceptance of all—and ensure that all employees are aware of how much Community values the differences that its people bring to the network as well as the influence that they have on the organization and employee relationships with patients and families.
