Aromas for Healing™, founded by Pam Conrad, R.N., clinical aromatherapist, was developed to educate clients about the benefits of clinical aromatherapy as a way to treat a variety of conditions, especially in women transitioning through various stages of life.
Wellspring Pharmacy shares Pam’s passion for combining aromatic complementary therapies with traditional medicine and is pleased to offer Aromas for Healing.
The health benefits and healing properties of clinical aromatherapy are accomplished by using pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils to treat a condition while facilitating the health and healing of body, mind and spirit.
Clinical aromatherapy, related to herbal medicine, is the therapeutic use of pure essential oils in physical and emotional healing to promote health and enhanced quality of life. Essential oils have been used for centuries by ancient civilizations for their healing properties. Today, clinical aromatherapy is practiced by combining conventional medicine with aromatic therapies, offering complementary options for health care conditions.
In treatment, essential oils can simply be used by inhaling them from a tissue, Aromamate/Chemomate, room diffuser, or diluted and used in baths, massage and compresses for various conditions. Depending on your circumstances, a single oil or blend may be recommended. In addition to a line of products, private consultations can be scheduled by appointment at Wellspring Pharmacy (especially recommended for pregnancy, cancer, menopause and infertility). Aromatherapy can be an effective way of combating stress and tension, while also promoting relaxation. It is also useful for other conditions, such as:
- Hormonal conditions/imbalances (i.e. pre-menstrual syndrome, infertility, labor and childbirth, post-partum and menopause)
- Anxiety and mild depression
- Aches and pains of daily life
- Colds and flu
- Cancer journey (fatigue, nausea, quality of life-consult with nurse/aromatherapist)
Modern scientific research has proven that essential oils are potent, with remarkable medicinal properties. When used correctly, essential oils are a safe option for many health care conditions. When we are looking for complementary options for our health and healing, essential oils are a convenient, practical and pleasant solution.
Guidelines for use (always external use only)
The main uses of essential oils are:
- Massage/skin application
You may wish to try some or all of the methods before deciding which is best for you. Your method of choice may also depend on your reason for using a particular oil or blend of oils.
Caution: Do not use the inhalation method or dab essential oils onto the skin or clothes of young children or babies. The oils are too strong and can cause a serious reaction. Always dilute essential oils before applying to skin.
Direct: Put 1 to 2 drops of essential oil on a tissue, cotton ball, or Aromomate and take several slow deep breaths for stress reduction, to fight colds or insomnia.
Indirect: Put 3 to 4 drops of essential oil into an air diffuser, vaporizer, etc. to spread the aroma into a room.
DILUTE essential oils in carrier oil or unscented lotion 1 to 5% (1 to 5 drops essential oil per 1 teaspoon lotion or oil). This combines the therapeutic properties of the oils with touch.
DILUTE 6 to 8 drops essential oil in 1 tablespoon whole milk or cream and add to a warm bath (no soap) and soak 20 to 30 minutes.
How to buy
- Pure therapeutic grade essential oils are not easy to find and using synthetic or perfumed oils can cause skin sensitivity.
- Always buy pure essential oils in an amber or blue glass bottle—never in a clear glass bottle.
- For effective therapeutic use, it is crucial that only pure essential oils be used—that is, natural plant essences which have been extracted by steam distillation or other extraction methods.
- Keep the tops tightly closed when not in use. If essential oils are stored in the correct manner, they should last up to two years. The exception to this is citrus oils, which can be used one to two years if kept cool.
