All inpatients at Community Rehabilitation Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, are provided with a private room for comfort and privacy. To help you prepare for your stay, please review Your stay: What to expect.
Our inpatient programs are designed for the individual who is medically stable, meets criteria for acute rehab admission, and can tolerate at least three hours of therapy a day. Rehabilitation is provided for individuals who have sustained physical and cognitive disabilities related to stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular diseases, orthopedics, amputations and related disorders.
A physiatrist—a physician who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation—oversees each patient’s medical care. An experienced staff of rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, psychologists and recreational therapists form the team that helps each of our patients achieve their maximum potential.
Stroke rehabilitation program
Community Rehabilitation Hospital has comprehensive programs and services for all phases of stroke rehabilitation, with an emphasis on treatment, patient and family education, and stroke prevention.
The brain injury rehabilitation program consists of two specialized brain injury treatment programs: acute brain injury rehabilitation and neurobehavioral rehabilitation, the only one of its kind in Indiana.
The acute brain injury program focuses on both cognitive and physical rehabilitation. The post-acute neurobehavioral program provides treatment and education directed towards the behavioral and cognitive aspects of a brain injury that often prevent patients from returning home independently. These programs consist of two distinct treatment teams and specialized treatment space.
Brain injury treatment requires a highly trained, experienced staff. At Community Rehabilitation Hospital, many of our staff have achieved certification as Certified Brain Injury Specialists (CBIS). These individuals have demonstrated the wide variety of unique skills and knowledge that are essential to treat individuals with brain injury.

Community Rehabilitation Hospital offers a specialized treatment team for individuals who have spinal cord injuries. This expert team includes a board certified physiatrist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, rehab nurse, psychologist, social worker and recreational therapist. When necessary, respiratory therapists, speech therapists and other treatment professionals may also be involved. Our goal is to maximize function and mobility while preventing complications.
During the rehabilitation stay, we educate our patients about all aspects of their injury and care so that they can return home as independent and productive as possible.
