Incontinence

Most of us are embarrassed to admit that we have a problem controlling our bladder or bowels, a condition known as incontinence. It usually is a problem that we don’t talk about with anyone, even our physicians.

Incontinence is not a part of the normal aging process! Many times, the treatment recommended for incontinence involves medication or surgery. Our program offers a simple solution, and all you have to do is ask.

Our focus is on addressing the cause of the problem and working with you on the best way to manage it. The program is tailored to meet your individual needs and is available to both men and women.

What is treatment for incontinence like?

A licensed occupational or physical therapist will evaluate you to determine the best treatment approach for incontinence issues. The therapist might use any one or a combination of the following:

  • Therapeutic exercise for pelvic floor muscles.
  • Computerized biofeedback techniques, which involve a computer telling you when your muscles are working properly.
  • Electrical stimulation for pelvic floor strengthening, urge reduction and pain management.
  • Behavior modification for poor bowel/bladder habits and stress reduction.
  • Tips on diet and nutrition and how to avoid foods and drinks that irritate the bladder and bowels.
  • Timing techniques and instruction on how to reduce urgency and frequent need to urinate.
  • Bladder and bowel diaries to assist in assessment and treatment.

How can I get incontinence treatment?

  • Tell your physician about incontinence treatment options and ask that he or she send you to therapy. Your physician must write a prescription for this therapy.
  • Call us or ask your physician to call us. Then we'll set up an appointment. It's that simple! Please contact one of our Community Physical Therapy and Rehab locations today for more information.
