Community Howard Regional Health Foundation

Foundation history and profile

In May 1956, the Howard County Commissioners appointed a Board of Trustees for "the new hospital in Howard County." Named to this new board of Trustees to represent four fields of community life were: William B. McFerrin, president of the Haynes Stellite Co., representing industry; Carl Tyner, farmer, representing agriculture; Walter Bennett, international representative of the Metal Polishers, Buffers, Platers and Helpers (AFL) a representative of labor; and Gene Pickett, a partner in the Mast and Pickett Funeral Home, Greentown, the business representative. These gentlemen, along with L.M. Lacey, Jr., promptly formed the Howard Community Hospital Foundation.

Their intent, taken directly from the yellowed pages of the Articles of Incorporation filed on November 21, 1958, was to utilize the donations they received "exclusively for the construction, furnishing, equipping and improvement of the facilities and services of the Howard County Hospital" and to "provide financial assistance for the improvement of the health, safety, and general welfare, and to aid in the alleviation of human suffering of all those persons connected with or using in any manner the facilities or services of the Howard County Hospital."

Their initial fundraising drive raised more than $600,000. These funds, along with a federal construction grant and a $1.8 million bond issue, helped build Howard Community Hospital for an estimated $2.5 million.

From those noble beginnings have followed more than 50 years of healthcare service to the residents of north central Indiana. Although their efforts have often seemed like an invisible part of the background, the Foundation has diligently worked hand-in-hand with the hospital since its inception, contributing millions of dollars of equipment, scholarship money and grants-in-aid to Community Howard Regional Health.

Every dollar contributed stays right here in this community...

…helping women who need, but cannot afford, a mammogram.
Over $50,000 in grants and contributions have been raised for the Free Mammogram Program through the Women’s Center at Community Howard Regional Health.

…helping students through scholarships for healthcare-related education.
The Maude Kelley Scholarship fund through the Foundation gave out $15,000 to students in medical fields this year.

…helping the community by providing funds for new equipment and programs.
The Foundation provided over $75,000 in funds for new equipment this past year. A few examples include:

…helping to bring quality care in your neighborhood.
The Foundation also purchased, with utilization of an unrestricted donation from the estate of Anna May Hamilton and investment income, the CommunityCare Mobile which will assist the Hospital in providing health-related screenings and education to the people of north central Indiana.

…helping uninsured patients get treatment and support they can’t afford.
Approximately 150 patients received assistance for prescriptions, cab rides and other needs through the patient assistance funds at the Foundation.

…helping hospital employees obtain critical certifications and education support.
33 employees received training, certifications or attended conferences this past year for approximately $28,000 through the Robert F. Miller Continuing Education Grant.

The Foundation focuses on three areas of giving:

  1. Patient assistance
  2. Staff training
  3. Equipment purchases

As you look at our success stories, you'll see specific examples of each of these three areas in action. You'll see your gifts at work building a better community.
