Meet the Culture of Health staff
Linda Caldwell, MSW, LCSW
Linda received her bachelor of science in psychology from Purdue University and master's degree in social work from Indiana University. Linda is a licensed clinical social worker with more than twelve years of experience working in community mental health. Linda has advanced training in cognitive behavioral therapy, action and commitment therapy, and motivational interviewing. Prior to joining the Health Promotions team, Linda spent the past nine years working as an outpatient mental health therapist. Linda operates within the framework that each person has within them the capacity to be their best self and create their best life. Linda is excited to work with the multidisciplinary Culture of Health/Bridges to Weight Management team, assisting others on their personal journey to health.
Kathleen Connelly, ACE, certified personal trainer
Kathleen has a bachelor of arts from Purdue University in exercise and fitness and movement in sport science. She has been a licensed personal trainer since 1999 and has also taught group fitness classes. While at Purdue, she worked for the YMCA and YWCA as well as two other fitness centers at Purdue. She also taught for the Health and Kinesiology Department her senior year. Since graduating in 2000, she has worked in a variety of settings in corporate health. She was certified by The Pilates Coach to teach mat Pilates in 2002. Kathleen joined Health Promotion Services as a preventive care specialist in 2003. She has helped facilitate health screenings, health/wellness presentations, a network smoking cessation program and wellness coaching for network employees as well as corporate clients. As a member of the new personal training program, she hopes to develop a variety of fitness programs that will meet the needs of Bridges participants. She is looking forward to working with individuals and groups to enhance employees' fitness levels and help them reach their personal fitness goals. As a personal trainer, Kathleen believes in taking one day at a time. “Each choice you make can add up to the changes that you want to see in yourself. A healthy life with physical activity can be achieved by believing in yourself and going after what you want!”
Kelly DeWitt, ACSM-PAPHS, Intrinsic Coach®
Kelly is a personal wellness coach for Community Health Network. She received her bachelor of science degree in physical education with an emphasis in fitness studies from Indiana University. Prior to working at Health Promotions, she was a telephonic health coach. Kelly is a certified Physical Activity Public Health Specialist (PAPHS) through the American College of Sports Medicine; a Freedom From Smoking® Facilitator through the American Lung Association; and a certified Intrinsic Coach® through Totally Coached, Inc. She intends to expand her knowledge with more certifications in the future. Health and wellness are important to Kelly and she is looking forward to assisting others by helping them find the power they hold within themselves to live a long, healthy life.
Pam Estes, M.S., RD, CD
Pam brings a new program and a new philosophy to the Bridges to Weight Management Team. Working with patients following medically supervised very low-calorie diets, she saw firsthand the heartbreak and anguish patients go through as weight loss is regained, which it inevitably is. She realized then that traditional approaches to weight loss do more harm than good, leaving patients feeling out of control of their eating, bad about their weight and unable to trust themselves to manage this important part of living. Her search for a better way led her to the work of Ellyn Satter (www.ellynsatter.com) and the concept of eating competence. As a faculty member of the Ellyn Satter Institute, Pam trains other professionals in bringing pleasure back to eating and fun back to feeding. As a member of the BTWM team, Pam teaches eating competence–the rewarding, orderly, self-confident middle ground between dieting on the one hand and throwing away all controls on the other hand–through the "How To Eat" program.
Adults with eating competence enjoy eating and feel good about that enjoyment; enjoy trying new foods and learning to like them; trust and respond to body signals to determine how much to eat; and make feeding themselves a priority. Adults who are eating competent raise children who learn to eat a variety of foods and know how much to eat to grow well and maintain a healthy body weight throughout life. Recent research indicates that as eating competence goes up blood fats, blood pressure and blood sugars improve. Eating competence can be learned by people of all weights and sizes, but they must be ready to give up weight-reduction dieting. In the words of one participant, in the How To Eat program, "I found freedom from the diet merry-go-round for the first time in 31 years. I had freedom at last to eat food without guilt and self condemnation and I knew I could tell when to quit."
Carla Ficorilli, M.A.
Carla has a master’s degree in wellness management with a minor in nutrition from Ball State University. She has been in the wellness field since 1998 providing account management, sales, telephonic and onsite health coaching. Prior to coming to Community Health Network, Carla worked as a research assistant at IUPUI with patients who had kidney disease and renal failure. She saw firsthand how important it is to take care of ourselves while we’re healthy. This also reinforced her desire to work in health promotion and wellness. Carla is a certified intrinsic coach, and uses both intrinsic coaching and motivational interviewing techniques to help individuals realize the power they have within themselves to make positive changes towards achieving optimal health. In her spare time, Carla likes to sew, knit, garden, exercise and play with her new baby girl.
Chris Garrity, M.S., ACE, certified personal trainer
Chris has a master's degree in exercise science from Miami University in Ohio. He has been certified with the NSCA since 1998 and has been personal training since 1995. He worked for the past seven years in Cincinnati at a hospital-based fitness center and has been a personal trainer in a variety of fitness facilities. He has worked as a land- and water-based group exercise instructor, an adjunct instructor with Miami University, and a sports conditioning coach. Chris and his family relocated to Indiana this past summer when he joined the Health Promotions team as a preventive care specialist. He has worked on the health screening team, performed health/wellness presentations and worked as an onsite corporate wellness supervisor. As a member of the new personal training program he will be developing the program with a dynamic group of health professionals to serve the entire network. "Working with my clients towards goal achievement and program progression is and has been a long-term passion of mine. I look forward to assisting the Bridges participants with their fitness programs and am excited to be a part of this program."
Melissa Boyle Hehmann, RD, CDE
Melissa graduated from Purdue University with a degree in dietetics in 1999 and is a certified diabetes educator (CDE). She has been part of Community Health Network since 2002, first working as the dietitian for Community Heart and Vascular Hospital. Melissa is currently working towards her bachelor of science in nursing through IUPUI, and plans on continuing to become a nurse practitioner. She loves to be active by teaching yoga and Pilates, and participating in marathons. She also enjoys cooking and trying new foods. Melissa feels that both variety with foods and activity is one of the keys to obtaining and maintaining good health, and most importantly, to keeping life interesting. She has come to understand that labeling foods as "good" or "bad" does not work for her or for most people. Melissa believes that food means many things to each person, whether it is celebration, family togetherness or tradition. These things should not be forgotten when dealing with others or ourselves. Melissa works with an open mind and welcomes the learning experiences that she gains from her peers as well as patients.
Roberta Mescher, CHIP coordinator
Roberta is the coordinator of the CHIP program (Coronary Health Improvement Project). She has witnessed the many positive effects the CHIP program has had on its participants, and has also experienced these benefits in her personal life. CHIP has made Roberta more aware of the healing and preventive power of food. Now, she keeps this power in mind when making daily food choices and fueling her body. Roberta feels that everyone can benefit from the CHIP program. CHIP doesn't just tell you what to eat; the program shows you why you should be eating it. Roberta has worked in the health care industry for nine years, seven of those with Community Health Network's Health Promotion Services. She enjoys the challenges of the many opportunities that come her way as she seeks out new methods of serving Community's employees. Roberta receives gratification in taking old favorite recipes and making them healthy as well as creating new recipes. She enjoys traveling and reading mystery novels in her spare time. She is the mother of two children and has five grandchildren.
Danielle Perry, M.S., Intrinsic Coach®
Danielle has master of science in health promotion and a bachelor of science in kinesiology, both from Indiana University. Prior to joining the Health Promotion team as a health coach in 2011, she served as an intern for the American Cancer Society and worked for an insurance agency that was primarily associated with Medicare coverage. She has recently obtained several certifications, including a Freedom From Smoking Facilitator and Intrinsic Coach®. Danielle is very passionate about improving the health of others and helping them develop an effective plan to reach their wellness goals. Danielle tries to lead by example by maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle of her own. Some of her hobbies include running, cycling and cooking.
Robin Stahl, RD, CD
Robin has worked at Community Health Network during her entire 29 years as a registered dietitian (RD). Robin has proudly met many milestones at Community including meeting her husband, having her two boys here and meeting some of her best friends. Her husband of 29 years, she and her two boys are all proud graduates of Purdue University.
Robin has seen fads come and go and knows that the path to a healthy weight does not include chasing the latest diet. The first step in the process of finding a healthy weight may not always include trying to lose weight. Meeting with a registered dietitian can help sort out what is best for an individual.
Robin's passion is meeting with people to help them down the path of improved health. She continually seeks out ways to make people feel confident about taking care of themselves. Whether someone's favorite food is pecan pie or broccoli, there are food facts to talk about. Robin believes that eating well is one of the best ways to take good care of oneself.
