Pulmonary rehabilitation

Cardiopulmonary rehab exercise equipmentIf you have a chronic lung disease such as emphysema, bronchitis or asthma, you may be interested in the pulmonary rehabilitation program at Community Heart and Vascular Hospital. People who live with pulmonary disease can be helped with therapy and exercise. It is our goal to provide you with techniques that can help you control your symptoms and disease. We want to help you breathe easier and stay as well as possible.

Pulmonary programs for wellness

Certified pulmonary rehabilitation program at Healthy Hearts CenterOur pulmonary rehabilitation programs are tailored to meet your wellness goals. After taking a pulmonary function test and exercise stress test, our staff works with you and your physician to determine the best treatment plan for your lifestyle and needs. Each program is broken into three phases.

Phases 1 and 2

Phases 1 and 2 last up to 10 weeks and focus on skills training and physical reconditioning. During this part of the program, your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, breathing technique, and response to exercise are continuously monitored. During your program, we send progress reports to your physician so that he or she is kept up-to-date on your status. You will also receive support in the appropriate following areas:

Pulmonary management is presented by a registered respiratory therapist and may include:

  • The function of a healthy respiratory system
  • The disease process
  • Breathing retraining and proper coughing techniques
  • Muscle strengthening and relaxation exercises to control shortness of breath
  • Starting a monitored exercise program
  • Stop-smoking education and assistance
  • Tips on daily living to conserve energy
  • How to use inhalers and spacers
  • Oxygen needs evaluation
  • Stress management/coping techniques
  • Identification of respiratory problems and how to avoid them
  • Assistance with home respiratory care
  • Aerosol therapy/chest percussion and postural drainage techniques

Nutritional management is presented by a nutritionist and may include:

  • Assessment of current nutrition plan with problems identified
  • Individual diet plan development
  • Education of the basic guidelines of nutrition and fluid for people with chronic lung disease

Medication management is presented by a registered pharmacist and may include:

  • Review of prescribed medication plan
  • Purpose of each medication
  • Common side effects and how they can be minimized
  • Importance of following prescribed medication plan

Phase 3

Pulmonary rehab programPhase 3 is a maintenance course for the graduates of Phases 1 and 2. At each visit, you will receive an initial evaluation before beginning your maintenance session and an exit evaluation before you leave. A friendly, supportive staff is available to answer questions and discuss topics of concern any time during your rehabilitation.

Who can participate?

The pulmonary rehabilitation program is available to people suffering from chronic pulmonary disease. Patients must be referred to the program by a physician.
