2009: Kidney Cancer

2009 Annual Cancer Report"On behalf of the cancer committee, I am pleased to present the Community Health Network annual report on cancer care for 2008. The cancer committee is a multidisciplinary group including physicians, nurses, administrators and social services, in addition to many volunteers. The task of this committee is to monitor and help to improve the cancer services at Community Health Network. Our cancer committee operates in liaison with the American College of Surgeons to monitor care and treatment.

"This year’s focus is on kidney cancer, specifically renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which accounts for 90 percent of cases. It is estimated that in 2009, there will be 57,760 new cases of kidney cancer and 12,980 deaths. These numbers include both adults and children. Most people with this cancer are older. It is very uncommon among people under age 45. Overall, the lifetime risk of getting kidney cancer is about 1 in 75. There are several subtypes of renal cell cancer, based mainly on how the cancer cells look under a microscope.

“We hope the information in this report will be useful for our patients and families. We sincerely thank you for your interest in our program and your support.”

—Sumeet Bhatia, M.D.
