About our programs

PGY1 residency in pharmacy practice

Pharmacy Residency The pharmacy practice residency started in July of 2002 and is fully accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Each year, Community Health Network recruits two pharmacy practice residents. The residency experience is shared among Community Hospitals East and North and The Indiana Heart Hospital, all within our network of five community-based hospitals in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Residency training includes required practice experiences in general medicine, ambulatory care, drug information, cardiology, behavioral care, and practice management. The resident has a great deal of flexibility in selecting elective experiences including critical care, infectious diseases, oncoloy, pediatrics/NICU as well as additional experiences in one of the required rotations. The residents also have the benefit of being involved in a longitudinal academic rotation providing instruction to pharmacy students at Butler University College of Pharmacy. Other aspects of pharmacy practice in which our residents may become involved include pharmacy on-call service, formal and informal presentations, journal club, performance improvement initiatives and mentorship of student pharmacists on rotation.

PGY2 residency in family medicine

The family medicine specialty residency started in 2004 and is designed to provide both clinical teaching and practical experience in the inpatient, outpatient, and university setting. Each year Community Health Network recruits one family medicine specialty resident. The residency sites involved in the family medicine residency include Community Hospitals East and North, The Indiana Heart Hospital as well as the Family Medicine Center. The resident will work closely with Community's family medicine residents and physicians. Please visit the Family Medicine Residency Web site for more information.

The resident's training experience may include family practice inpatient care, medication counseling in various ambulatory environments, chronic disease state management, health care provider education, and mentorship of student pharmacists and pharmacy residents in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The resident may serve as primary preceptor to student pharmacists from Butler University on either or both general medicine and ambulatory care rotation(s) and participate in classroom instruction (both didactic and case-based interactive discussion) of Butler University pharmacy students. The resident's experiences are not limited to the above, allowing the resident to tailor the experience to his or her professional interests.

 PGY2 residency in medication safety

Pharmacy ResidencyThe medication safety specialty residency is co-funded by Purdue University. The PGY2 residency is designed to transition PGY1 residency graduates from generalist practice to a specialized role as an organizational leader in medication-use safety. The resident will have the opportunity to function as a medication safety leader and serve as a resource for medication safety by learning the performance improvement process. The resident will also be involved with developing, conducting planning for, and managing changes leading to an ideal safe medication use system with knowledge on technology and automation design for safety. There will also be opportunities to precept Pharm.D. students, teach medication safety classes, and understand and participate in curriculum design for safety. Requirements of the residency include conducting a medication safety project through Purdue School of Pharmacy PharmaTAP program, being "on call" for risk-related incidents and patient safety issues, participating in the Great Lakes Regional Conference, and attending the ASHP Midyear meeting.
