The city is experiencing an influenza/respiratory virus outbreak. To protect our patients and the public, all visitors are being screened for influenza-like illness or exposure. If you have had any of the following symptoms less than 24 hours before your class, please call 317-621-7737 to reschedule:

  • fever greater than 100 degrees
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • body aches
  • exposure to anyone with the above symptoms

If your pregnancy requires a period of bed rest that prevents you from taking classes, all of this education is still available to you. For written materials from the classes, as well as e-mail and phone access to a certified childbirth educator, just call 317-355-7737.

How to register

You may call 800-777-7775 or register online for classes and events. We recommend that you register early in your pregnancy, as space is limited.

Maternity Tour
If you are not enrolled in the "Childbirth Prep and Newborn Care" class or the "Siblings" class, this is your opportunity to tour the maternity unit. The tour is free, but please register online or call to reserve space for each person in your party.

Childbirth Prep and Newborn Care
This four-session class is recommended for all first–time moms and dads/partners. The registered nurse instructor will cover the last trimester of pregnancy, the labor and birth process, relaxation and pain management options, postpartum and care of the newborn. The class INCLUDES A TOUR of the maternity unit.

Breastfeeding Basics
The lactation consultant will share tips to prepare you for breastfeeding in this one-session class for expectant parents. (Yes, dads and partners are encouraged to attend!)

Childbirth Refresher
Expecting your second baby? This one-session class doesn’t just “refresh” your memory of your previous childbirth class. You’ll discover how your body will experience pregnancy, birth and postpartum differently this time around. The registered nurse educator will also update you on changes in maternity care since your last baby and offer tips on preparing your first child.

Siblings
Created especially for brothers- and sisters–to–be! This single-session class is geared for the 3-8 year old. The one-hour class celebrates their new role and gives them a peek at life with the new baby. The open house format includes a short video and several hands-on activities with their parents. A TOUR IS INCLUDED to help prepare them for mom’s hospital stay.

CPR for Parents and Grandparents
This American Heart Association course is taught by a certified CPR instructor. This class is intended for expectant parents, parents and grandparents. The focus of the class is infant and child, but adult CPR will also be addressed. The class also includes valuable safety and prevention information to take home (baby-proofing your home, etc.).

Marvelous Multiples
This one-session (4 1/2 hour) class is for parents expecting twins or triplets. It is taught by a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse and a lactation consultant, and may include a visit from parents of multiples. A tour of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is included. This class should be taken in addition to the "Childbirth Prep" class.

Other educational opportunities

Natural Labor
This one-session class is an opportunity for those who are interested in a non-epidural birth to learn more about our "Doula" program, using a tub for labor, and other suggestions. Call 317-355-5232 to register.

Adoptive parents
Adoptive parents receive information about newborn appearance and behavior, learn baby care basics, and have a chance to discuss family adjustments and adoption issues. The certified educator is a nurse and an adoptive parent. Call 317-355-7328 for more information.

Car seat inspections
Parents or grandparents can schedule an appointment for a free 20-minute car seat check by a certified inspector to be sure their infant, toddler or booster seats are installed correctly. In Indianapolis, call 800-777-7775. In Anderson, call 765-298-5164.

Breastfeeding support groups
Share experiences, concerns and problem-solving techniques with our lactation consultant and other mothers who understand life with a breastfeeding baby. Bring your baby and make new friends! The groups meet weekly at Community Hospital North and Community Hospital South. For more information, call 317-621-5380 (North) or 317-887-7927 (South).

If your pregnancy requires a period of bed rest that prevents you from taking classes, all of this education is still available to you. For written materials from the classes, as well as e-mail and phone access to a certified childbirth educator, just call 317-355-7737.
