Community Howard Regional Health recognizes Judge Parry for work with behavioral health community

For release on May 19, 2016

Kokomo – The Behavioral Health Services Advisory Council for Community Howard Regional Health Behavioral Health Services recognized Howard County Superior Court II Judge Brant Parry and Lindsey Abell, RN, on May 18 evening with its annual Freedom Award. Freedom Awards are presented each year to a staff member as well as a community member.

The community award is presented each year to a business, industry, organization, group or individual that has advanced the cause of behavioral health, benefited those suffering from a mental illness, or contributed to the mission of Community Howard Regional Health Behavioral Health Services.

In describing why Judge Parry was selected for the Community Award, Lisa Pacheco, Executive Director of Community Howard Regional Health, noted that individuals involved in the legal system and living with serious mental illness are often those on the periphery of society, battling stigma, significant internal battles, and their own misunderstandings of who they are and what they can achieve.

“Judge Parry not only advocates for this vulnerable population, but he has chosen to join them in their journey,” Pacheco said. “In developing the Mental Health Court program here in Howard County, he has extended an opportunity for support and change to many who would have not otherwise considered treatment or self-care an option. He and his Mental Health Court team have become allies and advocates in the recovery journey of individual lives, and the impact is immeasurable.”

Lindsey Abell, a Registered Nurse with Community Howard Regional Health Behavioral Health Services, was selected for the staff award for her dedication in working with patients and their families. The staff award is presented to a Community Howard Regional Health Behavioral Health Services staff member who has demonstrated a personal commitment to the cause of behavioral health, benefited those suffering from a mental illness, or advanced the mission of Community Howard Regional Health through services above and beyond the normal duties of his/her position.

“Lindsey is one of our greatest assets to both the inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services teams,” Pacheco said. “She never complains when asked to do extra, she just pitches in and does it. To the best of her ability she makes sure each patient or person she comes in contact with is treated with the utmost respect and takes care of their specific needs in a timely and professional manner.”
