Indianapolis, IN---Having a baby at Community Hospital East has a whole new look, thanks to a recent renovation of the maternity unit and unique programs that help prepare parents for birth and beyond. The $400,000 investment in the east side hospital provides maternity patients with an updated healing environment and adds technology to support the delivery of high-quality care.
Fifteen freshly remodeled patient suites boast modern décor and ample space to accommodate visits from family and friends. The rooms are equipped for labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care, meaning that patients stay in one room throughout the childbirth experience. Additional updates to the unit include new incubators and monitors in the special care nursery and new operating tables and lighting in the operating rooms.
As part of the unique pregnancy and childbirth experience at Community East, expectant mothers receive free prenatal vitamins through Wellspring Pharmacy and all moms who deliver at the hospital receive a free Halo sleep sack and a car seat. Prenatal classes are also free to parents who plan to deliver at Community East. According to Angela Snyder, R.N., clinical director, “Our goal is to provide exceptional care to our patients, and these special gifts help ensure a healthy pregnancy and get mom, dad and baby off to a safe and healthy start at home, as well.”
In addition, Community Hospital East provides support through various programs to new parents demonstrating financial need. One program unique to Community provides eligible families a complimentary diaper bag filled with essential newborn care supplies, including bottles, sleepers, blankets, diapers and pacifiers. These bags are generously donated each year by Community Home Health Services and the Community Health Network Foundation.
To ensure families receive the highest quality of care possible, the maternity unit also has a room equipped with a Noelle birthing simulator, provided by the Community Health Network Foundation. This interactive training tool for doctors and nurses simulates a variety of childbirth scenarios. “With this technology, we can practice simple and complex procedures as a team,” said Paula Kivett, R.N. “It especially helps build confidence in our new nurses.”
