Community Health Network designated as Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip ReplacementSM

For release: 2/18/2010

Indianapolis, IN---Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana has designated Community Hospital North, Community Hospital South and Community Hospital East as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip ReplacementSM. Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement is part of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association’s expansion of its Blue Distinction® designation.

We are pleased to be recognized for this distinction which demonstrates the quality of care provided by our Centers for Joint Health at Community Hospitals East, North and South,” said Jon Fohrer, CEO of ambulatory services for Community Health Network. “This mirrors the positive patient satisfactions scores our program receives.” Community’s Center for Joint Health is a unit dedicated to the care of joint replacement patients. Its patients are otherwise healthy, but have severe joint pain. The program utilizes a strong educational component to prepare patients and family members for surgery. A family member or friend is an active participant in the process, not only to help the patient prepare for surgery and recovery, but also to help build confidence and motivation for recovery. Patients participate in group physical therapy, where they develop a competitive spirit to achieve milestones during their stay, and lasting friendships too.

“Blue Distinction puts a high value on research and evidence-based health and medical information,” said David Lee, M.D., vice president of health care management for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana. “We are committed to working with doctors and hospitals across the state who demonstrate quality, cost- effective care and better overall outcomes for patients.”

The selection criteria used to evaluate facilities were developed with input from a panel of expert physicians. To be designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement, the following types of criteria were evaluated:

  • Established acute care inpatient facility, including intensive care, emergency care, and a full range of patient support services with full accreditation by a CMS-deemed national accreditation organization
  • Experience and training of program surgeons, including case volume
  • Quality management programs, including surgical checklists as well as tracking and evaluation of clinical outcomes and process of care
  • Multi-disciplinary clinical pathways and teams to coordinate and streamline care, including transitions of care
  • Shared decision making and preoperative patient education

More information on selection criteria is available on www.bcbs.com.

The Blue Distinction designation is awarded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies to medical facilities that have demonstrated expertise in delivering quality healthcare in the areas of bariatric surgery, cardiac care, complex and rare cancers, knee and hip replacement, spine surgery and transplants. The program is part of The Blues® efforts to collaborate with physicians and medical facilities to improve the overall quality and safety of specialty care.

The additional Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement designations will bring the nation’s number of Blue Distinction designations to more than 1,600—and this number is expected to increase in the coming years.
