Community Health Network to open Shelbyville Central Schools Wellness Center

For release: 11/5/2009

Indianapolis, IN---Community Health Network will open a school-based health clinic inside the ShelbyvilleMiddle School later this month.  The Shelbyville Central Schools (SCS) WellnessCenter will officially open its doors to treat school children and their families on November 30th.   A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned at the site Thursday, November 5th, at 5:30 p.m.  The school is located at 1200 West McKay Road in Shelbyville.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature the following speakers: Mayor Scott Furgeson, City of Shelbyville; Dr. Robin Ledyard, president, Community Hospital East; Jack Horner, president, Major Health Partners; and David Adams, superintendent, Shelbyville Central Schools.

The SCSWellnessCenter is a collaboration between Community and the ShelbyvilleCentralSchools.  It is designed to provide health care to students within the Shelbyville Central Schools (which include three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school) while they are at school.  Services will include annual well-child exams; annual exams for men and women, based on a sliding fee scale; health education; referrals for mental health services; and assistance with enrollment in Hoosier Healthwise.  Community will provide a family nurse practitioner and certified medical assistant to staff the center.

The wellness center will share space with Shelbyville Central Schools Employee Health Clinic, offered by OnSite Solutions, a Major Health Partner. The clinic opened August 12th to all benefit-eligible SCS employees, their spouses and dependent children.  Services include free primary care, medications and prescriptions.

“Schools are the one place where most school-age children congregate six or seven hours a day for nine months a year,” said Dr. Robin Ledyard, president of Community Hospital East and former Shelbyville graduate.  “Providing high-quality health programs in school is the most direct, efficient way to assure that all children get the help they need to lead healthy and productive lives.”

“Our kids cannot learn if they are not well,” said SCS Superintendent David Adams.  “With the center, our goal is to cut down on absences and have healthy kids in their seats ready to learn.”

The wellness center is housed in renovated unused classroom space at ShelbyvilleMiddle School. Many of the school children who will receive care come from families who don’t have health insurance or medical doctors.

The center’s hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with some appointments available after school hours.  For more information on the center, visit www.shelbycs.org.
