Community Health Network Foundation announces winners of the It’s Our Community scholarship program; 12 high school seniors awarded $3,000 scholarships

For release: 5/3/2007

Indianapolis, IN---Community Health Network Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Community Health Network, awarded twelve area high school students a $3,000 scholarship to an Indiana college or university during a news conference at Community Hospital North on Thursday, May 3, 2007.  The scholarships are part of the It’s Our Community scholarship program, funded for the second consecutive year by the foundation.  Students receiving the scholarships plan to major in a life science course of study.

“This is another example of being committed to touching the community that we serve,” said J. William Kingston, president of the Community Health Network Foundation.  “We are proud to help advance these exceptional students in their careers to sustain the life sciences for the future.”

Twelve students from 24 participating schools were chosen as winners, following personal interviews and other criteria based on academic performance, community service, school activities, letters of reference and an essay on why they chose a life science career path.  Community Hospitals East, North and South awarded scholarships to select schools in their areas.  Winners were required to show proof of acceptance to an Indiana college or university for the fall semester.

The It’s Our Community scholarship program began in 2004 as a way to encourage Indiana college students to receive their secondary education in Indiana, with the aim of discouraging “brain drain” and encouraging students to live and work in the state.  The goal of the program is to retain the area’s top students to fill needed health care positions in the future.
