What is a genetic counselor?

Genetic counselors are specially trained, board-certified individuals who help people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease.

Who benefits from genetic counseling?

Patients who have family or medical history of cancer or other criteria below are good candidates for genetic counseling to help assess hereditary risk of cancer:

  • Breast cancer younger than age 50
  • Ovarian cancer at any age
  • Breast and ovarian cancer at any age
  • Two or more primary breast cancers at any age
  • Family history of multiple women in multiple generations with breast/ovarian cancer, especially including women with the traits outlined above
  • Individual in the family with a positive BRCA1 or BRCA2 test
  • Male breast cancer at any age
  • Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer

Cara Dresbold, MS, CGC, LGC

Cara Dresbold, certified breast care genetic counselorCara Dresbold joined the Community Health Network team as an oncology genetic counselor in August 2015. She completed her undergraduate training with a bachelor of science in psychology, minoring in biology, from Pennsylvania State University. She earned her master of science degree in genetic counseling from the University of Pittsburgh in 2013.

She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling, licensed in the state of Indiana, and a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the Indiana Network of Genetic Counselors. Prior to joining Community Health Network, Cara served as a genetic counselor for the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY.

Sandra Jenkinson, MS, CGC, LGC

Sandra Jenkinson, certified breast oncology genetic counselorSandra joined the Community Health Network team as an oncology genetic counselor in November 2014. She completed her undergraduate training with a B.A. in Biology from the Purdue University School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) in 2009. Sandra minored in Spanish and had the opportunity to study abroad in Salamanca, Spain during her undergraduate career. Sandra earned her master of science degree in medical genetics from the Indiana University Genetic Counseling Program (IUGCP) at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN in 2011.

She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC), licensed in the state of Indiana, and a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the Indiana Network of Genetic Counselors (INGC). Prior to joining Community Health Network, Sandra served as a genetic counselor at Indiana University Health.

Rebekah Krukenberg, MS, CGC, LGC

Rebekah Krukenberg, MS, CGC, LGC, certified breast care genetic counselorBekah joined the Community Physician Network team as an oncology genetic counselor in February 2013. She received her bachelor of science degree in biological sciences from Purdue University in 2010 and her master of science degree in medical and molecular genetics from Indiana University School of Medicine in 2012.

She is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling and is a licensed genetic counselor in Indiana. She is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) and the Indiana Network of Genetic Counselors (INGC).

Community Genetic Counseling appointments

An appointment with our board-certified genetic counselor will include:

  • Review of the medical and family history.
  • Education regarding role of genes in cancer and how cancer can be hereditary.
  • Assessment of the personal risk for cancer as well as the likelihood of an inherited cancer syndrome being present in the family.
  • A discussion of the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing for the appropriate hereditary cancer syndrome(s).
  • Facilitating communication between patients, families, physicians and insurance companies regarding test results and appropriate medical management based on the personalized risk assessment.
  • Psychosocial support for the entire family as they make informed decisions regarding testing and treatment options.
