Community Hospital East Family Medicine Residency Program

Distinguished alumni

Clif Knight, M.D.
Vice President for Education, AAFP

Clif Knight, M.D., distinguished family medicine residency alumniClif Knight, M.D., became vice president for education at the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, Kansas in May 2014. He was asked to take on this important role previously held by Perry Pugno, MD, a nationally regarded leader in family medicine education. Dr. Knight was a part of Community for the majority of his medical career. He was a resident in our family medicine residency program in the late 1980s, where he was named the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians Resident of the Year in 1987. He then practiced medicine in Flora, Indiana, before returning here as clinical director of the residency in 1992. Five years later he became co-director of the residency, then was named director in 2001. His peers honored him as Family Medicine Teacher of the Year in 2004. He was named Community’s chief medical officer in 2009, then chief medical and academic affairs officer in 2013. He also served as a member of the board of the American Academy of Family Physicians prior to taking on his role as VP of Education for them.

Dr. Knight played a major role as Community developed and nurtured its Culture of Safety, and he helped our network achieve measurable improvements in patient safety. He also helped pave the way as Community became a leader in electronic health record implementation—the family medicine residency was one of the first offices in the network to adopt an EHR system. He built bridges to our local medical schools, Indiana University School of Medicine and Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in an effort to ensure we have a strong pipeline of family physicians in the years to come. His strong commitment to residency education was an outstanding contribution both to the health network and to the Community Hospital East program.
